Femke Hiemstra is an artist from Amsterdam. She has had several successful shows at Roq La Rue, as well as group shows at Copro Nason. She paints whimsical and tightly rendered narratives on found objects- repurposing them to be fantasy objects. She has two big solo shows coming up- one at Copro Nason in April in conjunction with the Hi Fructose Group Show, and then again with me in August with Travis Louie. Femke just launched a brand new, gorgeous website- I definitely recommend taking a peek! www.femtasia.nl/Site/Home.html

Her work is beautifully crafted. Her concepts are so much fun for me, . . .they really need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated!

Moving this post over to this previously existing thread on behalf of roqlarue: "Femke Hiemstra’s meticulously tight, jewel like mixed media paintings and exquisitely rendered black and white drawings are homes to a dark fairytale land where inanimate objects come to life and frolic with animal neighbors. Lollipops become ship captains, strawberries become giant wrestlers, and vegetables become Halloween gods with lantern eyes. Femke occasionally uses typography in her work, using words from various languages and letters in her paintings to further enhance the narrative while still retaining a playful sense of mystery, or as a visual device to frame in the scenery, as if you were looking at her world through a secret window. She also uses found objects to paint on, such as boxes and wrappers, to create imaginary products with magical properties. Drawing from a range of influences, from firework wrappers to Japanese woodblock prints, Femke’s use of both pop culture detritus and child-like fantasy create a vibrant playground for the imagination, with each piece looking like a portal for a fantastic adventure, which is left up to the viewer to imagine the story that lies inside. Femke lives in Amsterdam where she also has a thriving career in illustration. She has book available from Fantagraphics entitled "Rock Candy". Femke has a new show entitled "Hello, Dachshund!" opening at Roq la Rue December 11th (alongside Junko Mizuno). Here is a selection of older works (all these are sold) and a sneak peek from the new show:

If I trusted any of you Internet weirdos enough to fill out that 2009 year in review thing, I'd definitely include that
I was fortunate enough to add a Femke piece to my walls this year, and it's absolutely stunning. She has a real mind's eye for the pop surreal, consistently belts out stunning shows, and released a really awesome book this year. I'm surprised there hasn't been more chatter about her 'round these parts!

Femke Hiemstra has some new projects in the works, on being a release of a beautiful collectable book based and expanded upon her "The Timid Cabbage" show held last year at Roq La Rue. It will feature the works from the show plus 11 new drawings and her trademark scriptwork. We are hoping for a Christmas release and I'll be sure to post more as we get closer to the project being finished. Additionally she is painting like crazy for her show this December at Roq La Rue, here is a sneak peek at one of her works!
