Damn! Brilliant work. A preview like this should be a wake up call to all the artists in our scene. Not enough work is pushing the envelope in the way that Williams does, IMO. We need to be working harder.
What I really like about his work is that the technique is top notch but there is also a lot of intellect and emotion, depth, humor and an edginess that is lacking in so much of the new art I see. It has balls at a time when we are drowning in cute, safe drivel (Hello Kitty? WTF?).
It's no coincidence that the guy who pretty much started this movement is still blowing everybody else out of the water. I am sure part of that has to do with the fact that he can still remember a time when our kind of artwork was completely unacceptable to the mainstream art world, something a lot of younger artists probably can't fully appreciate.

I tend to agree with you Chet. However I think few if any will ever come close to Williams as far as technique or his creative genius. I think that Williams more recent work is mild compared to his work of 20 years ago. These recent works of his do seem "cute" after looking at his Zombie Mystery paintings.

He may not be as edgy as he was when he was younger (age does tend to do that), but from what I have seen it still seems like his work still has that fire and energy. Maybe it's a little less cynical? And his technique definitely seems like it's the best it's ever been. I agree that few of us will ever reach his level but that should not stop us from trying.

“Diamond in a Goat’s Ass” is a classic. yea, that sculpt is awesome. I certainly know his work but don't know his pricing. How crazy is it typically?

His usual size works are int he 30x40 range, with some smaller and many much larger - but ones around 30x40" range seem to go for around $30-50K. He's been around forever and is simply a master. His pricing is well warranted, especially considering there are folks out there currently like Lori Early already commanding similar prices based on a body of work that is but a small fraction of the output of Williams' (not to mention no where near his imagination/skill level yet - sure this won't be a popular statement, but it's true). In person, his works just mesmerize. If in NYC, do not miss this show. His last big show was actually in 2005 at the Ben Maltz Gallery (OTIS College) - part retrospective, part new works - complete with his hot rods on show and Miss Derringer rocking the opening - a night to remember for sure. I tried to find my original post but I've re-launched Sour Harvest a couple times since then and can't find that anywhere. Some info on the show here though: artscenecal.com/ArticlesFile/Archive/Articles2005/Articles0605/RoWilliamsA.html

This gallery is messed up. So there is this waiting list to purchase a painting, that's fine, it's reasonable, the way a lot of artists work. So the gallery sends out letters saying "we are pleased to announce...blah, blah, blah...we look forward to hearing from you... .blah, blah, blah". They don't answer emails. They won't give any info over the phone as to where you are on this list, they won't give a price range, they won't say ANYTHING! This is the deal, if you are on the list you have to come to the opening to view and possibly purchase a piece but since they won't tell you where you are on the list you don't know if that might happen OR if you have the money. Who is going to travel 100s or 1000s of miles and pay 100s for a hotel room just to see if? I know Mr. Williams want's his work shown in big name gallerys but this place is pushing it a bit too far. Well the good thing is if you were there and were interested in buying, then Tony Shafrazi himself took you on a guided tour to "work with you" on something that's perfect for your collection. A potentially intimidating situation when you're not sure what is available at your price range. Old Fart, I bet you'll hear a reply this week on what's available. On a brighter note, the new Canon S90 is an AWESOME camera. I didn't have take the gazillion shots I usually took for shows like this. My new digital camera crush for the year.

www.americanethnography.com/gallery.php?id=109This link takes you to: 8 masterworks by Robert Williams (fairly large with sharp focus). Just thought my post might add some richness to this thread. I know fans of Robert Williams will love seeing these 8 works. ________________________________________________ Signed: Robert Singletary__Monday May 17, 2010__6:35 A.M. (eastern standard time) USA
