This show looks amazing. Im really impressed by everything I've seen so far. It seems like the show is suppose to be about endangered animals. Did tran do a endangered tree? Don't quite get how that fit's in. The show is animal-themed, although not exclusively about endangered animals. 20% of the proceeds (and all of the proceeds from prints) will go to Born Free and the Animal Protection institute, which advocate for the humane, ethical treatment of all animals, and also educate about the ways loss of habitat and other pressures are driving many species past the breaking point. In addition to its other activities, the API maintains a huge natural sanctuary in Texas for primates that have been rescued from abusive situations – mostly abandoned pets and the former inmates of petting zoos. Many of the artists we invited did choose to represent endangered animals. Others painted animals that are symbolically meaningful to them personally... for instance, Edwin Ushiro drew his 18-year-old cat Rusty, who died last year, blurring into incorporeality. Some of the artists approached the theme by depicting their feelings about how our endangerment of the world's animals simultaneously endangers ourselves, as we destroy our own habitat along with that of these seemingly more vulnerable species. For example, Moki painted a giant monkey cradling a little boy in its arms. Ben Strawn painted an old man, surrounded by images of the animals he has already driven to extinction (the passenger pigeon, the Xerxes blue butterfly, the golden toad) wheezing for breath in a gas mask – representing mankind, having endangered himself by his own heedless actions. Mike Brown painted animals acting out human activities, such as war, that will in lead to humanity's endangerment. Several artists, including Tran Nguyen, Kris Lewis and Nimit Malavia, approached the subject from a more emotional angle. Tran's paintings are always very psychological, and she chose to represent humanity tearing itself apart. Nimit depicted a very natural, classical beauty – the sort of values that are often lost today – and subtly related that to the loss of so many species, and owls in particular. Kris Lewis painted one of his naturally beautiful women, looking somewhat vulnerable and sad, standing in the depths of the forest... the rapidly disappearing habitat for so many species on the brink of extinction.

Well put Amanda. It has been an absolute pleasure working with the Commanda on this show. So happy with how it has come out and can't wait to all see Bumblebee's install - he just went above and beyond. Here's the preview for all the works in the show: www.thinkspacegallery.com/2010/01/works.php Dabs Myla 'Haystack Needles' (featuring the endangered Red Panda) *We still have just a few pieces to add to the preview - those will be updated this evening. Please do all you can to come out this weekend to view the show in person if in LA.

Thanks much for the props on the show everyone. Really excited at the reaction and we hope we raise a ton for the folks at Born Free and API. We just got a full-page color preview in the LA Times' Brand X magazine (free all over LA area). Will post a jpeg of it here later today once I scan it in. Came out great. Great lil' preview feature posted over at Hi-Fructose's site too: www.hifructose.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=457&Itemid=56

If someone is attending the opening and is able to pick up that Liz McGrath print for me, I'd be forever grateful... Thank you so much! Edit: Of course I'd be more than happy to pay extra for the hassle and/or try to get you some limited stuff from European artists - just let me know. Information from Thinkspace: "These are limited to only 30 copies - signed and numbered by Liz - only $50 at opening & only available in person at the opening reception."

Thanks for all the compliments, guys! Working on this show with Andrew has been a lot of fun. I wanted to share some detail shots of one of my favorite pieces in the show, "Carousel" by Eric Nyquist. wow that's amazing. someone else who's linework rivals aaron horkey's. I'll definitely be looking for more of Eric's stuff.

Thank you to all that came out and supported the opening kick off to this very special exhibition. The pet adoptions are in full effect as I type this and it looks like some puppies will be finding new homes today - SO cool. We're also gathering a ton of blankets, old toys, food, etc for local shelters as well on behalf of Blankets Of Love this weekend and throughout the month - so please roll through with any donations you can muster - all will be put to good use. Check out opening night shots here: www.flickr.com/photos/thinkspace/sets/72157623051068407/We will be posting some of the prints on our site this Monday - so we'll post a note here once those are live for purchase.

Here are a few more pieces I loved from the "Cry for Help" show that are from artists that don't have their own individual threads yet. Keep an eye out for these guys, they've got heaps of talent. Josie Morway's "What We Carried," a huge 48x48" oil on heavy cherry panel, was blowing other painters' minds all night. It's so smooth and feathery that you think it must be airbrushed, but you can't airbrush in oils. She's a very meticulous oil painter who only works in very large sizes... what a rarity! Everyone knows how much I adore the textures and composition of Dennis Hayes' bird paintings on reclaimed 2x4 assemblages in reclaimed paints and inks. This one, "Mourning Love," is very poignant. Inspired by the doves outside his window, “Mourning Love” refers to the mourning dove’s extinct cousin, the passenger pigeon. Last but not least, a surprise last-minute entry, professional illustrator Fred Harper's "Out for Roll." There's so much energy and humor and character in this one... see the fire hydrant marking on dog's forehead? Fred really found the sweet spot on this one.

We have prints left from all three - we will be posting them on our site this week - will post the link here once those are ready for out of state orders.
We'll be posting a collective interview with many of the artists this week on Sour Harvest - post up a link to that too here in this thread once that's up.
A number of the artists in the show also sent in pics of their pets - we'll be posting those this week too.
Thank you again to all that came out and donated blankets, toys, etc - we gathered a ton of stuff for the local shelters on behalf of Operation Blankets Of Love. We'll continue to take donations of blankets, toys, canned food, etc throughout the month, so please swing by with anything you can between now and Feb. 5th.
