Sloan Fine Art presents a solo in the project room by Edwin Ushiro "At Night, Lights Fell and Loved Ones Returned Home" Reception: Wednesday, March 24th, 6 to 8 pm Exhibition: March 24 to April 17, 2010 "The Secret Life of a Rustling Brush," 2010, mixed media, 31" x 21" The content of Edwin Ushiro’s work is as richly layered as the works themselves. Influenced by the memories and folklore of his childhood in Hawaii and with nods to Japanese Anime, he creates his own mythology populated with modern characters and contemporary references. With At Night, Lights Fell and Loved Ones Returned Home, Ushiro utilizes his technique of layering paint, ink, graphite, varnish and iron transfers on vinyl sheets to create romantic, luminescent works that focus on the often mystery, and histories, held by abandoned and forgotten places. Edwin Ushiro earned his BFA with honors from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Since he began exhibiting in 2006, his works have been shown at galleries and museums worldwide including LeBasse Projects and the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, Svenska Mobler Gallery in Chicago, Atticus Galeria in Barcelona, the Insa Art Center in Seoul and the Museum of Kyoto Japan. Ushiro currently resides in Culver City, California.

Edwin's new work is very strong. I know he put a lot of work agonizing over the perfect pieces for his NY debut and it has paid off. The vinyl 'canvas' is continuing to evolve as well and the new pieces are all plexi-backed...giving them an even more intense glow than before.

I saw these in person the other day, and they are gorgeous. Luminescent, atmospheric, deep and poignant.

I bought this piece. The light has a full spectrum impact like no other depiction of light with paint that I've ever seen, and the colors are so rich and appealing. To look at it is like being on vacation for a moment, transported to some sunny memory in childhood. And visually, both the angle of the background and the tumult of the ocean give the piece a sense of dynamic movement that contrasts the stillness of the figures momentarily frozen by some apparent shock.
Thanks to Commandex for the tip. I couldn't be happier with this acquisition!

Thanks Hellosir, I'll take your praise as an accolade on behalf of Mr. Ushiro's excellent work, since the only accolade I deserve is my ability to write a check. I met Edwin last weekend at an opening at LaBasse, just before his departure for New York for the opening. He's as extremely nice as he is talented, and generously expatiated about his artistic conception and unique process. You should definitely check out his show if you haven't already, and chat with him should you ever have the opportunity. Weezy
