Painting, University of Kansas 2004 B.F.A. Painting and Printmaking, The Herron School of Art 2000 “Gorgeously apocalyptic and subtly infused with a dark whimsy, Anthony Pontius uses a variety of media (mostly oils and pencil on wood panel) to create his haunted and stark landscapes that have a strange resonance to the unearthly works of Bosch, inhabited by strange creatures and degraded machinery. With narratives looking like the end of a bleak fairy tale that did NOT end happily ever after, the canvas is then splashed with streaks and blotches, and re-worked with pencil creating intricate scarred vignettes of ghostly words and images. Each painting is suffused with a smoggy, smothered glow that creates an evocative and enigmatic aura.” (kirsten anderson) The caped cobra and his merry band of riders are a group of humans that evolved during the end of the technological world of old... in order to survive, they must coexist with nature by any means... much like early human nomads, the band traverse the land searching for their long lost connections to the world... as they grow the union establishes a new identity... Anthony currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He has taught extensively at the Des Moines Art Center, the University of Kansas, the Lawrence Arts Center and the Herron School of Art and Design. His work has been exhibited in many galleries, universities and venues nationally. Anthony Pontius received his M.F.A. in Painting from the University of Kansas in 2004 and has taught extensively at the Des Moines Art Center, the University of Kansas, the Lawrence Arts Center and the Herron School of Art and Design. Pontius creates via a variety of mediums (mostly oils on wood panel and graphite on paper) to create his beautifully apocalyptic landscapes that bring to mind the unearthly works of the great Hieronymus Bosch. Infused with a dark whimsy all his own, Pontius’ narratives bring to mind the dark fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. His work is infused with a spirit that is hard to pinpoint, a sort of underlying frentic energy created via his intense layering technique. Beneath the smog defused glow lies a ghostly underworld not that far removed from our own, although in Anthony’s world, there is no happily ever after. Pontius’ work has been exhibited at many galleries, universities and venues nationwide. Thanks Weezy! We'll post some more pics of the interior soon. Just a few more things to do before we're all done and can start hanging Anthony's show. I'm sure several here are familiar with the old BLK/MRKT space, but we've been busy making it our own for the past month knocking down some doorways and expanding the overall flow of the space as well as building out a new back office and storage area. Dabs Myla also just stopped by to add a lil' mural flavor to the bathroom. So pumped for all to see this coming April.

Thanks Simon! You need to get down to LA sometime this summer for a visit (and I need to get my butt up to Toronto too). Yeah - Billy moved BSFA back into LaLuz - will now be two full galleries there operating each month starting next month I believe. Will post some more pics of finished pieces from Pontius along with some of the gems to be featured in "Hunt & Gather" and "Vision" soon. ALSO - will post lineup for the Sat evening book signing of 'Hunt & Gather: Discovering New Art' too - some big names on board for the signing event on Sat night that will follow Friday's opening reception. SPECIAL BOOK-SIGNING EVENT: Sat, April 10th 6-8PM Full lineup of artists showing up for the book-signing event announced soon!

Confirmed lineup for the special book-signing event: Liz McGrath, Greg 'Craola' Simkins, Joshua Petker, Victor Castillo, Tiffany Liu, Nathan Ota, Nate Frizzell, Yoskay Yamamoto, Charles Wish, Scott Belcastro, Edwin Ushiro, Brandi Milne, Aaron Kraten, and Dave Pressler along with the author Tina Ziegler and Beau LeBasse (who wrote the forward for the book). Possibly one or two more artists still to join on as well. Don't miss this one! BOOK SIGNING: Sat, April 10th 6-8PM @ our new Culver City location A supply of 'Hunt & Gather: Discovering New Art' will be available / arrive early to ensure you get a copy to have signed by all the artists that will be on hand. Info on the book itself: Hunt & Gather: Discovering New Art was written by author and London Miles Gallery (UK) curator Tina Ziegler, in order to showcase a contemporary view of international art featured in galleries and media across the globe. This striking collection of surrealism, pop art, illustration, collage, graphic design and mixed media represents many of today's most boundary-pushing artists. Aspects of this collection are dark, at times macabre, but these images are complemented by arrestingly playful pieces, and accompanied by first-person texts that shed light on how and why these individuals make their art. Featured artists in the book: Aaron Kraten, Andy Council, Brandi Milne, Carlos Ramons, Carrie Ann Badde, Catalina Estrada, Charles Wish, Greg Simkins, Jason Jackenco, Chelsea Greene Lewyta, Dave Pressler, Diva, Edwin Ushiro, Elizabeth Mcgrath, El Gato Chimney, Emilio Subria, Georgina Ciotti, Jon Beinart, JShea9, Joshua Petker, Karl Persson, Kukula, Mad Steez, Mr.Gauky, Nathan Frizzell, Nathan Ota, Plastic God, Romanowski, Scott Belcastro, Scott Campbell, Scott Radke, Scott Scheildy, Tanner Goldbeck, Tessar Lo, Tiffany Liu, Timothy Hon Hung Lee, Tina Imel, Victor Castillo, and Yoskay Yamamoto. www.huntandgatherart.comwww.thinkspacegallery.com

Juxtapoz posted a nice lil' brief interview with Anthony Pontius this morning: www.juxtapoz.com/Features/back-talk-with-anthony-pontiusIn speaking with Anthony recently, he shed a lil' additional light on the background for this new series of work: "the elusive caped cobra is not one painting but the essence of the entire show... the caped cobra is like a deity that represents the power hidden in the beauty of nature... yes, she can be deadly but never will she abuse her power... we traded that force in exchange for a separate history of humankind... so it is now the merry band of riders who are dedicated to uphold her message thus preserving the lost harmony..."
