yeah i was looking at this preview and really like the bright colors with this apocalyptic disney wasteland. The Murakami piece is fantastic as well, wish I was buying now but saving up for this summer.

Yeah it would be wonderful if the Murakami II would be made into a print. The preview is pretty solid and it was a surprise to see his prices had not really changed in 2 years. Love the colors, but has anyone else noticed that these paintings are not as sharp as his BLIGHT show?

I agree, there is a definite change from the Blight show to now.

Definitely a difference. For reference, so we have both in the thread

seems like he's developed into a slightly more saturated color pallette while at the same time being a bit less photorealistic and a bit more "cartoonish" (for lack of a better word) in his painting style. I think it works pretty well to create the disney vibe that he seems to be shooting for (albeit a post-apocalyptic one). would definitely be fun to see these in person.

Love the colors, but has anyone else noticed that these paintings are not as sharp as his BLIGHT show? Good eye, devours. I thought the exact same thing when i saw these pieces. I agree with epic in that they seem a bit more cartoony than his blight pieces. Not so much the subject matter, more so that the lines are not as sharp and the color palette seems a bit brighter. Not saying that it's a bad thing, just an observation. My thoughts are that he may have purposely made his Blight pieces a bit darker and gloomier. If you look at his previous work you can see that most of his pieces are similar to his newest ones, with a few exceptions. Like i said, i absolutely love my Gillette, and his work is arguably a great deal considering the size of the pieces.

Really cool piece, Steve
Thanks for sharing these images, Hung-Hei. The bright colors really works on conveying the theme (Disney Wasteland).

Thanks for the comments on my work.
There are two bodies of work in the Dismayland show. One is a series of oil paintings that may or may not include a small amount of collaged material, much like what I've created in the past. The other series is acrylic and collage, where a major portion of the foreground shanties is created using cut-out portions from Disney kids books. These are re-assembled from little parts to create walls, stilts and roofs of the shacks, then I go back and add cast shadows and details to unify the materials. It is really difficult to see that on the web pictures. I enjoyed trying this new approach and hope you do too, but try to see the real thing before the show comes down at the end of this month!
