sounds interesting walt. i like the idea of the copper plate etchings using the tattoo gun. i'm not buying, but wouldn't mind seeing prices from this show if any has any yet?

something about this photo being used for marketing just feels wrong to me. he has this big outburst of principle in mexico city...and now that's being used to market his works?
makes it feel like a stunt to me.
i'm probably just reading too much into it.

Hmm..I didn't even really think about the motives behind the image selection or the marketing of it. But it's an interesting implication. It seemed he was certainly criticized initially for the situation in Mexico City, so it doesn't surprise me that people would perhaps view it through that same lens. And I can understand why people were suspect of the drastic measures he took then, questioning whether he was leveraging the situation to his advantage in some way. Ultimately, the last thing he needs is publicity. I'm sure he'll have no problem selling out another show regardless of flier images et al. I have to imagine the situation in Mexico is something that was deeply personal to him, regardless of how it looked from an outside perspective, and will now be an unavoidable part of his narrative, for better or worse, from here on out. I see the decision to torch some of his currency works as an evolution of sorts and might very well have been experimented with as a result of the socioeconomic commentary achieved even if the situation in Mexico had never manifested itself. I also just truly love his currency work on so many levels, so I find the the symbolic implications of burning them, and without the Mexico show in mind, quite fitting in this day and age. Meh, enough already with my drawn out rants. I appreciate you making me thinking about this, though. It's a rare thing for discussion to actually spring up around here ever. I invariably feel it trivial after I think this shit through and type it out. I need to start self-editing.

I went to the opening and I must say, I haven't been this inspired by a (relatively) new artist in quite some time. A must see in person as the images don't do his work any justice. The money pieces are two inches deep, so the detail is outstanding. His progression from the cut bill sheets to the ostrich eggs show the guys got some real vision going on.
Where are all the good pics? I mean, show me that Spiderweb piece. And those flys? Come on now.

Yes, that woman/skull egg was killer. Took me a minute to figure it out. Check out all the little hairs on the flys. And that web was just captivating. Loved how the whole piece converged into one dollar.
If you have a chance you should definitely drop by to see this stuff in person. Can't really see any of the depth in these pics.
