Richard Heller Gallery is pleased to announce David Jien's debut solo exhibition, which opens on September 10th. Entitled "The Plight of the Who," the show will feature 20 new drawings, each one a glimpse into a fantastic existential narrative based on the artist's perspective on the world we live in. Taking inspiration from the infinite possibilities of science fiction, the storytelling of Henry Darger, the isometric perspective and narrative geography of Nintendo and Chinese scroll paintings, the eroticism of Japanese pillow books and the limitless transformations of graffiti, he has painstakingly crafted a series of intensely detailed scenarios in colored pencil on paper. He characterizes this body of work as the first chapter of an epic chronicle in which all the characters are essentially versions of himself, and the events that unfold echo his own struggles with self and his own desires.
The opening reception for "The Plight of the Who" will take place at Richard Heller Gallery on September 10th from 5-7 pm, and the exhibition will be on view through October 22nd.
"Ride or Die"
"Hurrah 4 Us! Birth of the Chosen One"
About the Artist:
David Jien grew up in West Los Angeles, immersed in his own world of Nintendo, Legos, puzzle toys and manga. Obsessed with drawing animals and monsters as a child, he later transferred that passion to graffiti, and spent many years bending, melting and transforming letter forms upon the walls of the city. After the graffiti lifestyle turned complicated, he enrolled at Art Center College of Design, graduating in 2009 with a BFA in Illustration. He initially focused on graphite drawings of metamorphosis, alphabets, rubbery forms, alien biology and geometric psychedelia, establishing the setting of his narrative landscape and evolving his own folklore about the dawn of time, when mythological beings still walked amongst men. More recently, he began working in colored pencil to develop an allegorical future history about a power struggle in which human and anthropomorphic beings fight against a race of balloon-headed creatures and the cold-blooded reptilian overlords who seek to control everything. In the past year, David Jien’s work has been enthusiastically received at the Pulse Miami Contemporary Art Fair and at The Armory Show in New York.
