I personally find the whole chocolate mold idea a little gimmicky and would say its a step back for Matt more than anything. The idea is a bit different but nothing special in the slightest. While its fun, I personally don't think it's something to go out of ones way to add to the collection.
I hope he goes back to the more complex and thought out paper based works sooner than later ?!

rizza, i find it interesting that you're saying this without even seeing the whole show. though i do know where your coming from.

rizza, i find it interesting that you're saying this without even seeing the whole show. though i do know where your coming from. i saw the work. just doesn't do anything for me. i respect him trying something different. its just not something I think warrants spending this sort of money on as I don't see it really holding up as a strong example of his work over time. i guess that is the great thing about art...what some people like others don't and vice versa.

Okay. I can see what you're talking about.
For me, the works relate to his paintings, but the impressive detail is lacking. Time will tell how the 3D works play out. I've felt this same way when I've seen other artists transition dramatically to a new medium, or style.
And shouldn't this thread be merged with the existing Palladino thread?

I have to say I think it was a real hit or miss type move and I like that, but to be honest I really only liked a few pieces and would tend to lean towards both rizzas and parklifes statement. For the way his prices have moved I would prefer something more typical that really showcases his talents. That said I can definitely see where he went with this concept.

no need to candy coat these things. far from the compelling work he's been putting out for years now. sure, there are some that aren't god awful. but none make me rethink my initial judgement of the project as a major misstep, regardless of however many points you want to give him for experimentation which is how i initially justified it. luckily, he's young enough and has shown enough promise to overcome a misstep like this. something like this could very well end another artist's career. needless to say, i don't think many of us will be looking back at this chapter as anything but something to chuckle at. thankfully its just a phase..or better be.

I cant quite come to a decision on these, one look i think its just a gimmick and a phase which should never be talked about again and then i go away and come back to the PDF and think its genius.

And shouldn't this thread be merged with the existing Palladino thread? The other thread is an artist thread. The threads in this section are for particular shows. Although there is some overlap, we feel that things work best this way.

finally managed to get a sneak preview of the show earlier today... now, i may be biased considering that i've been an early supporter of his works, but when i saw the preview over the email earlier, i glanced at palladino's new works with a grain of salt as my rule was not to rely on images to enjoy the artworks. once i arrived at the gallery, the new works perspicaciously exceeded my expectations. they were quite phenomenal upon first sight as if they just took my breath away. upon close inspection of the huge works, there were insidiously alluring details that you wouldn't even see in the photos such as prominent christian motifs, clever use of colors for distinguishing the objects (real gun and gestural gun). even the works that i wasn't fond through the PDF analysis, my body twitched when i saw the pieces in person that turned out to be one of the best works in the show. i was totally hypnotized by his relief works that i lost track of time and good thing that i didn't get a street parking ticket. i'm definitely coming back again to get tinkly aroused by his new works this weekend, this time with my wife. the show actually made me realize how lucky to have palladino as one of the SF's true brilliant artists. again, i sincerely apologize if i'm actually raving about palladino's dysfunctional sensations. i hope that i'm not being a lunatic loon here!

wow!
10,000 bonus points to gamma for proponderously reviewing this show. truly excellent use of nouns and adjectives.
though i can't say it as well, i also previewed the show, and in person, the works really do look great. and with talking to palladino, i now have way more respect for just how much work has gone into these. he's a machine with his level of perfection.

As much as i do like the works i am going to sit on the fence and see where he takes it, they say never buy a first gen apple product and i do believe that this rule applies with artists who are entering new phases of work. That may prove me wrong in the long run but thats the joys of art. That said i do think that this show will be a huge success, i know the works have been selling well and my first choice was gone before i could enquire.

gabe, thanks for the words. wonderful. wish i could see these in person. volvic, he pretty much enters a completely new phase and new aesthetic with each show he's ever done. this is probably the biggest step yet though.

Yeah i am aware of that sven its just this time it feels like a complete disconnection instead of a partial one. Still it makes it all the more interesting and everyone will be watching him even more from now on.
