Bumblebee really knocked it out of the park on his installation for the "A Cry for Help" show at Thinkspace. Here are a couple of pics of one of his awesome phone booth modifications. His concept for these pieces is to do with the fact that these old pay phones are being supplanted by cell phones, and their empty husks are everywhere. Meanwhile, scientists believe cell phone signals may be interfering with bee populations and their ability to navigate and communicate. Hence, the bees are taking over the empty phone booths in response. He's installed these all over Orange County and is moving into Hollywood. If you like this stuff but you're not a high roller, a few bees are available at the show for $50 each.

I actually enjoyed the simplicity and tenderness of some of these. Might've grabbed one, if only because the prices were so damn reasonable. Luckily, they had all gone to good homes already.
On a somewhat related note (ok, barely..but still very interesting), did everyone hear that they have solved the elusive honeybee death mystery?
Military scientists and entomologists (basically bug scientists) have teamed up to discover that it's a combination of a fungus and a virus, a sort of kick ass one-two punch that knocks bees down for the count.
They're unsure how the combo works but it makes for a killer cocktail that does its damage in the bee's belly (leaving scientists to think it's nutritional). It's been known that the fungus was part of the problem, but new software developed by the military uncovered a new DNA-based virus called N. ceranae.
What's crazy is how these bees die: One perverse twist of colony collapse that has compounded the difficulty of solving it is that the bees do not just die - they fly off in every direction from the hive, then die alone and dispersed.
Sort of an insect insanity.

Agree this was a strong showing by Bumblebee. The work seems simple at first but then it's not. My favorite was "Hand me Down," which utilized existing tagging and stickers in the girl's dress and shoes but was otherwise polished down with a smooth epoxy finish. I got one of the stuffed "Babees" only because that was pretty much what was left a couple hours after the opening.
