Well, the year seems to be coming to an end and as promised it seems like a good time to start this thread. This was one of my favorite threads from the last two years (thanks Charity and Amanda) so I haven't changed anything. I Can't wait to see everyones reflections on the past year.
1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year.
2. Best experiences?
3. Biggest disappointments?
4. Who are your rising stars?
5. Best show of the year?

I'm still waiting on a few more things before I post.
A couple of weeks ago, I said I would start this thread and since every year it's been posted around this time, I figured today was a good day.
After seeing some of purchases people have posted this year I don't know how some of you are going to choose your top picks for the year.

Well, my year in art is pretty much wrapped up, so I will start things off. 1. Top 3 acquisitions this year. Andrew Hem "Beginning of an Era" Frankly, I could have chosen my whole top three, and then some, from my Andrew Hems... but that doesn't seem fair. So... Tessar Lo "Ambition 2" This piece doesn't really shout as a jpeg, but when I got up to the show in Toronto and saw it, I knew I had to have it. The dynamics of the background are so intoxicating. Edwin Ushiro "Study for 'He Still Moves Through Everything I See'" I also have the actual painting this drawing was a study for, but there's no topping the life and emotion in Edwin's line. He is the finest draftsman I know. 2. Best experiences? Becoming good friends with one of my favorite people in the world. Co-curating the "Cry for Help" benefit show with Andrew Hosner, and seeing it turn out to be a big success. An incredible road trip to the desert with the guys, full of sketching and other mischief. A beautiful summer night wandering San Diego on foot looking at street art after the MCASD "Viva la Revolución" opening. Witnessing the enthusiastic reception Tessar's work got at his first hometown solo exhibit at Show & Tell. Countless fun times with the Thinkspace crew in their beautiful new gallery space. Watching Dabs Myla paint a huge wraparound mural at my office. Being given amazing interviews by David Choe, Mark Ryden, Blek le Rat, Rob Sato, Thomas Doyle, Aron Wiesenfeld, and many others. 3. Biggest disappointments? A bizarre and vindictive Tweet that made one of the finest nights of my life just a bit less enjoyable. Perfidy, faithlessness and deception... why can't we all just do the right thing? 4. Who are your rising stars? David Jien, Dabs Myla, Kevin Titzer, Eric Nyquist. 5. Best show of the year? Best art: Andrew Hem "One Leads to Another" at LeBasse Projects Best installation: Dabs Myla "Tokyo Deluxe" at Thinkspace Best show I didn't see in person: "Hell's Half Acre" at Waterloo Station

You have awesome taste commandax. I always like to see what you have bought. I wondered where that Ushiro went, I love it. The art and concept behind Cry For Help was great so you should be proud. I've been talking to (well, mailing) Andrew a bit recently and he seems like a very cool person.
As for me this year. Well it's been very quiet. Bought a couple of small things. I have been focussing on supporting my girlfriend through the downturn so that's taken priority over art.
Might post up a print which I love when I decide....

Commandax:
You have my all time favorite Andrew Hem piece-- I can really say that I love every single thing about it. It is "the piece" that catapulted him to the top slots on my collecting list. His work is keeps getting better and better with every show, but I'm still waiting for the successor to this incredible work.
I'm surprised you didn't include the Sato. I love that piece of yours-- it was the blockbuster of his Copro show (would it have been #4)? With your amazing collection I don't know that 3 is enough.
Also we're aligned in our views on a lot of artists, and I find it interesting that you put Dabs Myla high on your lists. I personally did not expect to like their work, but the Thinkspace show just blew me away. It's both very thoughtful and very painterly in a way I didn't expect-- so different from my initial (dismissive) reaction when I first saw the digitals for that show. They're definitely talented-- and they seem like a really nice couple to boot.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.
Yes... if I had five slots I would definitely have included the Rob Sato and João Ruas pieces. But I've had such tremendous good fortune this year, it's really difficult to choose.
I've always enjoyed Dabs Myla's sense of humor and deft technique, but their installations were what really won me over. Watching them paint a mural at my office this week has been such a treat. They are delightful people, and have tremendous skill with both the brush and the spraycan.

That's cool that you arranged to have them do an installation at your office! In the building where I work we just have a bunch of portraits of happy patients and life sized bronzes of our former CEOs-- which is (at least regarding the portriats, inspiring, but not art. Even in the personal offices, there's usually nothing. I have a small piece in my office, with no room for anything else because it's otherwise all windows and cabinets. I'm jealous.

I'm lucky to have very cool, creative bosses who get the art thing. I have four big Tessar Los and a big Andrew Hem in my office, too... no windows, though, only a skylight... so they are kind of windows of the imagination for me.

Top 3 acquisitions this year. 1. Ryan McLennan 2. Kevin Earl Taylor 3. Dan May 2. Best experiences? Definetely my upcoming commision from one of my favorite artists. I haven´t received the piece, only seen the sketch. But I am sure it will turn out just beautiful. He has been great to deal with, kept his word and been very communicative all the way. It´s been a 1.5 year wait which made me almost forget about it, but I am sure it will be worth it. 3. Biggest disappointments? That I couldn´t afford a Sorren painting this year either, but I guess I gotta get used to the thought. ;D 4. Who are your rising stars? I was so sure last year, but so much harder this time. I think Ryan Mclennan could have a good year in the making, looking forward to his new pieces at Joshua Liner late 2011. Martin Wittfooth will be interesting to follow as well. The pieces I´ve seen so far from his upcoming show, looks like he stepped up his game on so many levels. 5. Best show of the year? Joe Sorren at the Grand Central Art Center. This guy is out of this world, haven´t seen a piece by him which hasn´t blown my mind. Especially At Tea with Roeishi moved something very deep inside me, so much more than a painting to me. Really looking forward to Wittfooth´s as well.

Especially At Tea with Roeishi moved something very deep inside me, so much more than painting to me. Agreed. Far and away the best show I saw this year. Having seen his work in person I've become a huge fan. Incredible.

1. Too lazy to post pics. And there were many "smaller" ones... But Phil Lumbang, Eleanor Davis, and Tran Nguyen were the TOP THREE. 2. Best experiences? Meeting other collectors, people that simply appreciate art, and many of the artists of whom make this beautiful art that we bask ourselves in. 3. Biggest disappointments? Having people say hurtful things in regards to my collecting "free sketches". But I realize that I don't have anything to be ashamed of because I don't flip stuff and kiss the a$$e$ of artists and/or gallery owners to buy art. I simply buy what I love and can afford. Also, there have been some terrible group shows that I am sure I have forced out of my memories... 4. Who are your rising stars? These artists have been mentioned before... 5. Best show of the year? David Choe @ LAzarides, Jay Jay Burridge @lazarides, Ekundayo thinkspace, Dehara @giant Robot

i can't imagine too many people would be upset with a year like that. it also sounded like you had a big budget change recently so i admire your patience in waiting for the right piece that you couldn't resist. just post it for 1st-3rd if it makes you feel better.
