Art Basel adventure guide... « Thread Started on Oct 24, 2008, 2:32pm »
MIAMI ART FAIR OVERVIEW (focusing on the pop surrealism/low brow/urban contemporary worlds):
We’re excited to be headed down to Miami this December to take part in GenArt’s Vanguard Fair. With all that will be going on during Art Basel week, we put together a lil’ “must see” list for ourselves and I thought I would share with those of you who might be headed down. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of galleries showing in Miami during this all-important week/weekend and below is a brief breakdown, by Fair, of the galleries that will be showing at each that come from the New Contemporary side of things (Low Brow, Pop Surrealism, Urban Contemporary, Graffiti, Street Art, etc) that regularly get attention from our lil’ bubble within the art world at large.
By no means is this a full list, you can check each Fair’s site for that. This isn’t even close, there is SO much going on during the week of Art Basel in Miami, no one person could really hit it all up. We’re just providing a focused list to help you try and traverse all these amazing Fairs in the time given, with an eye towards the pop surrealism, low brow and urban contemporary worlds.
If you make it down to Miami, please swing by our booth at Vanguard. ________________________________________

Thanks Seth!
I'll be posting an updated version of this on our blog and reposting here too this weekend. A TON of add'l stuff now going off - including an on-site mini-fair put together by the Friends With You gang and much more.
Oh man - there will just not be enough time to see and do all... and the Rubell Family Collection is having an opening too as always... ugh!
Look for a slew of sneak peeks from our "Looking Glass" show to be posted over the coming week and, the good folks at AM will be down blogging away live for all those that can't make it down...

A gallery sent me a VIP pass for 1+ guest for the Agua Art Miami that I will not be using. If some one wants it, let me know by private message. If times allows & mail over the holiday, I may be able to get this out to someone planning on going.

It is a very exciting season for art, and I personally am very excited to see so many emerging galleries participating in art fairs and events. These fairs used to be the domain of the "high art establishment" only.
I don't consider my gallery "lowbrow" but I am sure that is how it is viewed from certain parties - and to see the Art Fairs give us and our circle of galleries the credit we deserve for showing quality work is very validating. I have no doubt we will all make a strong impression on the people we introduce our artists work to in Miami...and I know the fans on these boards who will attend Basel will have a great time experiencing an overwhelming volume of amazing work from other galleries as well...

You should also make a special note that Irvine Contemporary will be exhibiting at scope and showcasing some long overdue work by Dalek / James Marshal.

It was a beautiful piece and amazingly lifelike.
A sticker on the crate read, "Fragile, Handle With Care."
But when New York artist Carole Feuerman peeked inside Monday night, she gasped.
"Oh my God!" And then again.
"Oh wow," refusing to believe her work of two years is now cracked into tiny pieces, like a big broken doll that just can't be fixed.
"It feels like I was torn in half, too ... so much of me is in this piece. It was so spectacular," Feuerman said, searching for broken fingers in the debris. "It looked like a real girl, but you knew it wasn't."

i'm sure it's a small consolation that they're going to display the wrecked piece, crate and all, but i think it's a nice gesture, and will certainly be thought provoking to those in attendance.

Damn, I'm missing out from the art to the parties, Basel looks like a blast. Also I realized that Basel is like one of the best art buying opportunities because you can jump waiting lists and just buy whatever you see usually. Hm...on second thought maybe it's good I'm not there.
Anyways, here are some images. Alot more photos with our coverage here.
