TODD SCHORR: THE WORLD WE LIVE IN March 28 – April 18, 2009 Opening Reception: Saturday, March 28, 2009, 8-11pm Gallery Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 12-6 pm Merry Karnowsky Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition of new works by renowned American artist Todd Schorr. One of the most prominent pop surrealist painters working today, Schorr uses the exacting techniques of the old masters to paint colorful cartoon characters, corporate mascots and other pop culture icons in a unique style he calls “cartoon realism.” Schorr’s work is highly influenced by the popular culture of his childhood: post-war 1950’s America. His formative years were spent watching countless horror, sci-fi, war, cartoon, cowboy, and puppet shows on a black-andwhite TV set, building styrene plastic models, reading comic books, and leafing through his parents’ National Geographic magazines. The compulsion to replicate the characters he saw in cartoons, commercials, comic books and magazines led to a formal education at The Philadelphia College of Art. Schorr began his career as an illustrator in New York City, which exposed him to a new set of influences from the world of advertising and commercial art. Though his career as an illustrator was successful (his work appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 1982), Schorr soon left the commercial world and began expressing his ideas on canvas. Schorr says: “Like any artist of worth, it took many long years of struggle and investigative thought along with trial and error as well as constant honing of technique to reach the point where I felt I had created a language which, when spoken well, would command some semblance of purpose. I work in what is best described as a surreal style but filtered through the mind and eyes of what is, for better or worse, uniquely American.” In 2008 Schorr’s work was shown at the Laguna Art Museum as part of “In the Land of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz School,” and a solo retrospective exhibition will be held at the San Jose Museum of Art in 2009. Schorr’s work has been featured in Juxtapoz, Dangerous Ink, and in the documentary film, The Treasures of Long Gone John. Schorr’s most recent monograph is Dreamland, 2004, published by Last Gasp Press. His new book, American Surreal will be released in 2009. Schorr currently resides with his artist-wife Kathy in Los Angeles, CA. For More Information, please contact Merry Karnowsky at mkgallery@att.net.

Since he hasn't shown in sometime, this may be getting downplayed a bit... but this is to the caliber of a Ryden solo. He's one of the pillars of this scene. His work is SOOOO sought after. This is going to be huge. Soooo can't wait!!!!!
Just saw that post on AM.... WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haha. I'm not one for exclamation marks usually but they are definitely in order when it comes to Schorr's work. Him and his wife Kathy are also the nicest people. It was kinda surreal to be in his studio checking out his. Well, here are some pics but you can check out the entire set here.

I'm really looking forward to this. I've been following Schorrs' work for years. I remember a great show he had at Tamara Banes' gallery back in the early 90s and I passed on a opportunity to acquire, I'm still sick over it. His work has evolved so much over the years, this show will certainly bring it up to an other level.
Thanks for the great pictures and interview!

Wow! Have not heard Tamara Bane's name for awhile. Robert Bane did some killer shows back in the 80's and 90's. Loved his Melrose Gallery Waited every year for Bane's Annual Olivia & Eyvind Earle Shows. I still have a Schorr "Date With Mr Big Bad" limited edition I purchased from Bane.
Merry Karnowsky worked at Bane years ago if I remember right. She's probably the one who brought in Schorr & Williams to show at Bane.

Does anyone know the details on the giclees? I know "Ape Worship" is released on paper for $1500 and canvas for $2000. The canvas is an edition of 5 and I think the paper is something like an edition of 30. I'm not sure what the sizes are. I'm not sure what other pieces will be available as prints.
Ape Allegory + When Fairy Tales Collide: Canvas 30" biggest dimension $1600 - Paper 36" biggest dimension $1100
Ape Worship: Canvas 40" biggest dimension $2000 - Paper 48" biggest dimension $1500 -------------------
We have several of Merry's large scale giclees of Todd's work and the quality is phenomenal! I own most of Mark Ryden's (Porterhouse) giclees as well which I used to use as benchmarks of top quality with giclees and I can say without pause they have nothing over Merry's TS giclees! They're beautiful...

But the real question is, how do they compare to Simkins' recent Giclees?!?
For whatever reason, I've never been terribly keen on Todd Schorr's work. I think I struggle getting into it due to his subject matter and compositions. I certainly respect his contribution as one of the progenitors of this movement back in the day. But I must admit, those detailed shots of some of the pieces from this show are crazy. So clean and tight, it's amazing! Flawless!! It would definitely be a treat to witness them in person.
