LeBasse Projects is proud to announce ‘Hakuryuu – White Dragon’, new works by Yumiko Kayukawa. This anticipated exhibition is Kayukawa’s first solo exhibition with LeBasse Projects after appearing in several group exhibitions. In reaction to the devastating earthquake that hit Japan in 2011, Yumiko Kayukawa explores personal coping mechanisms in the aftermath of an unforgettably painful event. Like many others, Kayukawa finds herself feeling helpless and still grieving for her native country. The show title, ‘Hakuryuu – White Dragon’ symbolizes an omen of good fortune. It is through the new paintings that the artist pushes themes of optimism and good fortune, hoping it will help send a positive message in the aftermath of such tragedy. The event takes place the LeBasse Projects-Culver City- 6023 Washington Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232, the Artist Reception is September 8th from 6pm-9m, and the show is up until October 6th. I'm very appreciative that you post the online preview link here on Artchival. Frankly, it is more efficient and humane, at least from my point of view as a collector. So ... thank you.

How about an interview too: Tomorrow night Yumiko Kayukawa will open with her much anticipated solo exhibition, “Hakuryuu” at LeBasse Projects. We were was able to catch up with Yumiko and talk about this exhibition. Enjoy the Q & A! LBP: I know the Japan earthquake was a large influence in the theme of this upcoming show being good fortune or Omen, but could you elaborate more on the theme and what it means to you? Yumiko Kayukawa: It’s my second show since the earthquake in Japan. The situation is still bad, and I feel disappointed. I can’t ignore this feeling and it shows in my work. Positive or negative, my heart is always focused on my home. Hakyryuu in Japanese means white dragon, which people say is good luck. The dragon is a god of water. A rising dragon is also good luck. And this is happens to be the year of dragon. LBP: In general, what are your biggest inspirations or influences when creating your art? YK: This is a questions that I am asked the most in interviews. I always answered that it’s Rockn’ roll and movies first. But I think I should say now it’s all of the things that happen in my life. It was a big change for me to move to the U.S and living in two cultures gives me inspiration. Also, I love animals and wildlife. It’s one of the biggest inspiration for my art. I guess because I can see more animals here in the U.S and I’m exited to be a part of the society. I love rock n’ roll and movies a lot, but I’m too busy to enjoy them. I feel like I’m behind! LBP: A large portion of your work is done with acrylic, is there any other medium that you have tried or will try using in the future? YK:So far I really enjoy the technique I use now. It’s always acrylic paints for color and ink pen for thin lines. I can’t imagine it changing. more at: LBP news
