Jeff Soto @ Riverside Art Museum (12/13/08)
« Thread Started on Sept 5, 2008, 9:36pm »

Just wanted to drop the date a little early since it's all the way out in Riverside. Saw some of the work for this show and some the the plans Jeff has for this show today. Sounds like it will be pretty epic. If you like Jeff's work, definitely try to make it out to this. I think during Baby Tattooville, there will be an opportunity to drop by his studio. Hopefully I'll be able to post some pics then if Jeff is okay with it so that you guys will know what a treat you will be in for in December.

This should indeed be an Next-Level event for Jeff, and has fans. I cannot to see what Jeff has in the works and expect nothing short of brilliance. I'll be going home to California for Christmas shortly after the opening, so I'll be able to view the show in person.

Dumb question, perhaps....But this isn't a "museum show" in the conventional sense, where landmark pieces from private collections reconvene for public exhibit, correct? This is simply show - albeit large and important - in a museum-like venue, right?

From what I've gathered, there will certainly be a great deal of new work. I wasn't sure, however, if it will be entirely new work or if there will be a component to the show where older pieces were gathered and displayed in conjunction with the new paintings.

It will be mostly new work. There will be a few older pieces borrowed back for the show I think. Sales are handled thru Kinsey/Desforges so sign up there.

Here is a very large piece that Jeff is working on. It's pretty mindblowing. Some more pics here.

I think there will be about 20-30? He's filling up one big room downstairs with paintings and installations.

I recently hung out with Jeff all day at the Potato Stamp Studios in Riverside on Thursday (10/30) and the show is looking tight. Jeff is still working out the finite details, building a large scale installation and has plenty of goodness planned. Kinsey gets the good fortune of selling Jeff's originals through Black Market and this kid is fortunate enough to pick one of the pieces for his collection, thanks to a long open commission initiated over a year ago. The show is looking tight and if you want to see more and photos and all, check out http://murphydesign1.blogspot.com/ and catch the goodness. I promise to figure out how to post images soon.

Jeff and I are working on an exhibition catalogue for "Turning in Circles," and it will be limited to 500 copies and promises to be a one of a kind. More soon and an interview segment with Jeff shortly.

Looks like his installation is coming along nicely.

Grabbed that from Mark Murphy's blog where he also posted an interview. Here is what Jeff said about his museum show.

MM : Describe your upcoming show “Turning in Circles”
Soto : It's a continued exploration of the past themes I've been working with- politics, the environment, fatherhood, fears and worries/concern for what the future holds. The complexity of modern living, and all that it entails. I'm relating it to my own life, growing up in O.C. and then Riverside. There's elements in many of the pieces that hint at my upbringing- some of the stories of the Soto family are in there.

Visually I am exploring paint and being more spontaneous, trying to stay open to ideas and approach the panels without preconceived notions. I cannot shake my love for painting and rendering objects, and giving into my fertile imagination. I think if one was to look at my work from the past couple of years they'd see in some ways it is getting less character based, in favor of just painting what I feel needs to be there. I'm trying to avoid gimmicks, trying to stay honest with myself.
