Recent comment from Stefan Simchowitz on Torey Thornton: "On another note, if you do your homework. I pay my bills, honor my word and deliver. Time and again. Hard things to do consistently. I have experienced so much unethical and contractually illegal behavior it is shocking. I financed a young artist Torey Thornton for over 6 months over a year ago. He has yet to deliver paintings and now that he has a new gallery it has been suggested he breach his arrangement. Why? I am a "flipper" and "bad". So the artist will demonize me and justify it with the mythology of convenient opinion that he is justified within the moral construct of the business. He had no gallery when I met him and in fact communicated several times to me that he was going to deliver until, bam, his new dealer says don't give him the work. He ignores me, justifies it I am sure with the mythology of young artist abused, not the mythology of the emails I would receive each month asking to pay his studio rent, which I did for four months longer than requested even. He will be sued in court and he will loose, no question, but the behavior I have seen demonstrated consistently is disgusting."
I was surprised reading this but it does seem to show the extent to which galleries will go to control an artist's supply. It's the key to their business. If you could buy an artist's work from a number of different sources then a gallery would have to work to attract collectors. But if you are the main supplier what a great position to be in.
