Gauntlet Gallery is proud to present two geometrically inclined exhibitions for the month of November; NeoGeo is a two-person exhibition featuring Carl Cashman and Liam Snootle in the Gallery 1 space, and BlackThings; a solo exhibition by Parasite in Gallery 2. Both exhibitions are guest curated by Sven Davis.
NeoGeo is an exploration of color and form. A new expression of geometric art by UK based Carl Cashman and Australian Liam Snootle.
With roots and inspiration from within the culture of street art and graffiti, these contemporary provocateurs have defined an energetic new movement borne out of an appreciation for geometry, emotion and historical art movements of the past.
Melbourne based Liam Snootle presents his origami inspired creations both on the street and on canvas. Snootle uses spray paint in a range of contrasting tonal increments to create a series of angular shapes. The hard edges are precise; making the depth of dimension achieved on the flat surface majestic.
These works are as much about color theory as they are form and context. Red represents warmth and comfort whilst his blue paintings tend to be inspired by tension and anxiety. The shapes generated are not just borne out of a desire to create an aesthetically pleasing abstract form; the axis points are influenced by a variety of mathematically calculated factors. They are maps, journeys, constellations and progressions through musical adventures, usually coming from the direction of a post-punk soundtrack.
Carl Cashman’s new works continue to develop his own distinctive brand of Op-Art he has named Neometry; geometric based Op-Art made with a primarily neon based palette.
Cashman presents a series of intricately woven acrylic patterns and motifs on a range of media including bespoke wooden panels, found paintings and re-purposed objects.
His bold use of color takes on another dimension when exposed to black light as a further level of both color and fluorescence is enhanced and revealed by ultraviolet light.
Cashman’s work uses flat blocks of color arranged in such a way to present a series of dimensional portals that leap off the wall through by his use of tonal balance, creating the illusion of dimension and depth. These abstracted realities challenge our perceptions of volume and space.
His cleanly painted lines carry a level of precision that can easily be confused with computer generated imagery upon first glance, but a second look reveals that all of his work is painted meticulously by hand – a testament to not only his confidence as an artist, but also the fastidious level of planning and draughtsmanship that goes into the creation of each work.
Poland-based artist Parasite’s series of BlackThings paintings utilize found & existing paintings and prints as a canvas where traditional works are over-painted with brutal geometries.
The original context of the source paintings are changed and subverted with distorted volumes and masses of anti-image to create a new vocabulary.
Portions of the original image are retained by Parasite as he plays with our sense of perception – depth and dimension present a renewed allegory that emphasizes unfamiliar details within the framing of the existing image. Parasite distorts stories originally told by the like of Caspar David Friedrich, Egon Schiele, Maurice Utrillo, Paul Gauguin amongst others; and lends a new angle to abstraction within the setting of traditional portrait and landscape painting.
All three artists are firmly grounded in a contemporary gallery context, and have a flair for eliciting their art in an urban setting.
The exhibitions open at Gauntlet Gallery on Saturday November 7th from 7:30-10pm.
The artists will be present at the opening.
