I thought it would be fun to add a food related thread to the Kitchen sink section of the forum. My wife and I are total foodies and are always looking to discover some new gems. We are moving to LA sometime this summer and will be driving from NYC. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
For all of you traveling to NY, here are some must go to places. Caveat, if you planning on buying an OG or paying off a large purchase, skip these and get a $5 foot long.
Blue Hill at Stone Barns. Skip the Manhattan location of this James Beard winning restaurant. Stone Barns is a working farm 45 minutes outside of the city. Everything about this place is phenomenal.
The Modern. This is by far one of the best meals we have ever had in NY. Overlooking the sculpture garden at the MOMA, this place lives up to the hype in every way. The value is better than admission to the museum.

Hi Sleepboy, not sure about Flagstaff but if you want the treat of a lifetime go to Guy Savoy in Vegas. The restaurant is in Caesar's Palace. I'll be jealous if you go there.

Thanks for the advice guys.
Turns out we skipped dinner in Flagstaff cuz we got back so late. Now I know why Flagstaff sounds familiar Sven - because of Sorren. Did you visit the Grand Canyon while you were here?
Will see if I can try those restaurants in Vegas... LOL Cory, I guess it does make sense to trust you then.

We are moving to LA sometime this summer and will be driving from NYC. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Hi, I'd recommend my two favorite places. I eat here all the time (at least once per week). But if you're more of an unapologetic velociraptor type carnivore, then you might want to skip them : ) Real Food Daily (located in Santa Monica, West Hollywood) www.realfooddaily.comM Cafe de Chaya (located in Culver City, Beverly Hills, Hollywood) www.mcafedechaya.com

Nah I didn't get to the canyon. Desperately wanted to, but just couldn't fit it in. Enjoy vegas! My friend was there a couple of weeks ago and blew a whole wad of money! Take it easy....

Didn't realize it was so expensive though. Luckily, we did the pre-theater prix fixe menu to minimize the damage. Food and service was top notch. Thanks!

For the Greater LA area
For Chinese HotPot I like: the "Little Sheep" chain of restaurants, a nice herbal broth.
For the best pan fried dumplings I like: Luscious Dumplings - arrive early otherwise they run out, check on time of the day they are open before you go.
For Korean BBQ I like: Koreatown's "Corner Place" for the combination of crisp cold "Dong Chi Mi" noodles and Salty hot House Beef. Koreatown's Shik Do Rak for their "flat noodle sheets" that you wrap with your thin BBQ beef.
For the best Japanese Curry I like: Any of the "Curry House" chain restuarants
For Shabu Shabu I like: Mizu 212 on Sawtelle Street
For Brazilian food I like: Cafe Brazil on Venice St. Bossa Nova on Sunset.
For the best Taiwanese drinks try any of the "Tea Station" or "Guppy House" chains.
That's all I can think of right now.

www.slashfood.com/2009/06/03/anthony-bourdains-13-places-to-eat-before-you-die/Anthony Bourdain's "13 places to eat before you die", this guy knows his food. I'm thinking of going for the tasting menu at "The French Laundry" this year. The tasting menu is $240 each, but I've heard its worth it. When I go to NYC for Audrey's show in December, I plan on hitting up Katz's Deli, Difarra's Pizza, and omakase at Sushi Yasuda. I'm just as excited for the food as I am for the art.

Hey Sabotage, Katz's and Difarra's are part of NYC foodie history, though I will gently warn you that at this point Difarra's is the place to go to if you are already in Brooklyn. It is not worth a special trip to Brooklyn. I don't know where you plan on staying when you are in NY, but let me know and I will be happy to direct you to the best slice of pizza in every neighborhood. If you are on the Lower East Side more than once, I always suggest Wylie Dufresne's WD-50. www.wd-50.comIt's definitely an experience and while the tasting menu is $140, it is for 12 courses and Dufresne is almost always in the kitchen cooking your meal for you. They will also cater to any dietary restriction, which is usually unheard of on a tasting menu. My only criticism of the restaurant is that the decor does not match the menu. Ask for a tour of the kitchen after your meal. If you end up doing the tasting menu at The French Laundry this year, please PM me with every detail. It is definitely on our to do list.

awesome advice. I should have thought of WD-50, I may forego Yasuda for that. I'm sure you're aware that Wylie is competing on Top Chef Masters starting Wed on Bravo. So Difarra's isnt the best?! Are you a Grimaldi's or Lombardi's fan or somethin? Gildoinc, do you have a route for your trip yet?

Personally I think DiFara's is the best!
Try and see if you can get into Momofuku Ko, David Chang's 12 seater. $100 per person tasting menu that could easily go for double, beverage pairing is $55 I believe. Reservations are handled online and only 7 days prior, been there twice and definitely one of the best meals I have ever had.

Difara's is the best. Hands down. Always worth the hassle (and it usually is a hassle).

Should we rename Artchival to "Art Hound".
Outerborough is New York's Anthony Bourdain. You'll be very lucky to follow him around NYC for a weekend. Your belly will thank you, cause he knows the best places to grub in the big apple.
Josh Liner will attest to that...

Ok, well I'm going to have to politely disagree with Outerborough and Liner about Difaras (Maybe it was the day I went but . . . ). I'd argue that the best pie in NY right now is coming out of the oven at Adrienne's Pizzabar on Old Stone Street in the Financial District. While the service can be hit or miss, the pie is always on.
Outerborough and Liner, if you care to go share a pie I'm down.
For anyone visiting NYC, Batali's OTTO Pizzeria and enoteca on 5th Ave and 8th street is worth a visit at the end of the day (it's way too crowded at peak hours). It's really more of a wine bar that sells food, but the food is always spot on and very reasonable. It's open late, it's festive and the food is really reasonable.
As for our road trip - we are totally open to suggestions -- we would love suggestions. My wife is taking the bar in LA at the end of July and we fly back and start our drive to CA around August 2nd. We're thinking NYC - Chicago - South Dakota - Wyoming - Utah - LA.

Zelo in Arcadia specializes in this crazy cornmeal crust pizza that I think is the best pizza I have ever eaten. I heard about it from a food critic on NPR and it happened to be only a couple of miles from where I live: www.zelo.us/
