I just came to see if we had a thread for Jacub Gagnon's work, and strangely we don't. Previous discussion has been scattered in release and show threads, so i thought i'd bring a focal point here for Jacub's work.

Really looking forward to seeing his new works at his upcoming Thinkspace Show. Here's one of the pieces he previewed on Facebook. I think its called GoldiOx:

thanks for the commission jacub, congrats on a kick ass job, cannot wait to parade this one inside my house
This piece is incredible... The detail and lighting is amazing, plus the subject matter is very witty. What direction, if any did you give Jacub when commissioning this work?
I don't think jacub would mind and maybe he can share his own thoughts, but basically I put forward an idea before his last show, but when it came time to paint for me he wasn't feeling my idea and threw his my way, both ideas were poles apart but I decided to run with his

Thank you to those who commented. Thought I'd share a quick thought about my personal experience with the commission process. I've been asked for specific things in pieces, people have come to me with full ideas and some have come with just a hint at what they would like to see in a piece. I haven't done much commission work at this point, but I try my best to deliver and give the customer something they will be, without a doubt, happy with. In the beginning stage of a piece I go through many ideas. For every 1 idea I have 10 get tossed aside. Not that those are bad ideas, but sometimes it takes time for them to evolve or to see how to make them fit 'just right.' As such, it's hard when someone comes up with an idea of what they would like to see and for me to make it work in the first try. On the other hand when given a hint of an idea, I can take that small direction into 10 different avenues and maybe find 1 that I think fits the part. In the end, I think it's important for the artist to create a piece that can meet the satisfaction of their customer and at the same time it should hold to the standard of work that attracted the customer in the first place. All in all, I think it's best for both parties to go into these sort of transactions with an open mind. Was a pleasure working with you Clem!
Jacub is participating in show 'Impetus', at the University of Arizona's Joseph Gross Gallery with his latest painting, 'No Preservations'. The piece is a commentary on the diminishing population of wolves around the world due to destruction of territory and human encroachment.
Wow I like that polar bear piece a lot. Everyone has heard about the melting polar caps and the ramifications of it, but for some reason to me this painting really captures it and drives the point home for me.
