Anyone know where this is being installed? this was from the 'water under the bridge' show, his last solo in SF at white walls. he also hung bowls with goldfish (most of which were dead by end of show) along with cages of live birds (not sure if they survived the exhibit either)

Uh, that's disturbing if the fish and birds died. What's up with that?

Uh, that's disturbing if the fish and birds died. What's up with that? Yeah, seriously. Weren't people all up in arms about the guy with the dog in a gallery a while back? This isn't any different. And who wants to see dead fish and/or birds? Goldfish really aren't too hard to take care of, are they?

And who wants to see dead fish and/or birds? Goldfish really aren't too hard to take care of, are they? Well supposedly the dog was secretly fed at night and survived the show. The artist was just trying to get a response from viewers. But dead fish and birds aren't cool...

Did a little interview with Sam regarding his upcoming show at Subliminal Projects: “this new show is a transformation. I wanted to have each piece an exercise to train myself to do things better, and with more heart and attention. I wanted each piece to make me better and not just spin my wheels doing the same thing over and over.” Check out the rest here.

Have always struggled to get into Sam's work (the big hands disturb and baffle me), and there are several pretty bad misses in this show (imo, of course), but I gotta admit that this piece is pretty damn cool. The simplicity of the composition is compelling and the contrasting color palette is quite dramatic. I really think less is more with Flores. Many of his paintings are too busy for me.

I have to agree Lowpro, though I come from a history of being a big Flores admirer. I think there was a good deal of ambition in this body of work, however I think it revealed some technical deficiencies (though I say this looking purely at pictures on the screen and not seeing this show in person), and I agree many of the new pieces are a bit too lush with color and density (hierarchy is a bit lost)
Though the dragon painting you commented on and some of the drawings are some of the best I have seen from him, the whitespace really let's the image breathe

Hm... Interesting. Not sure how I feel about it exactly. On the one hand, it's pretty obvious Flores just replaced the boy in the image. On the other hand, he does make it characteristically his own. It just seems a little lazy maybe. Why, put yourself at risk. Would you guys feel different if he had repainted the tree and dragon himself? I know these topics never leave the artist's threads but just wanted to point out there are some other general threads of interest pertaining to this here & here & here.
