My new art buy: Glitch-Alike 5 by Mark Stebbins, Canadian artist. acrylic on paper 11"x11" With a combined interest in traditional craft textile practices and contemporary digital media, Mark Stebbins has created the conflated world of “Glitch-alikes”. He builds the image by hand opting for an organic, personal and labor-intensive method. The references to the failure of some system structure shift from tight matrix to abandon unraveling without repeating a stitch. His imagery alludes to both a tension between data accumulation and/or degradation, and that found in an unanticipated error or a spontaneous malfunction, also known as a glitch. The densely built up surface of fragmented mark-making fluxuates between two axes, that of digital organization, and conversely the possible corruption of data; and that of the order found in the hand-crafted textile matrix, and the possibility of a slipped stitch. Through the metaphor of order and chaos, Stebbins traces, and links, the similarity between the bespoke sphere of crafts such as weaving, embroidery or knitting; and the industrial litany of the digital universe that includes pixels, rasterization, vector images, defragmentation and the imminent electronic glitch. As the gaze seeks a place to rest within these densely packed images, the elements remain active. These are pictures in flux, caught in moments of transition.
