i always liked his work until i recently went to a solo exhibit he had in chelsea, found out that he paints on top of photos he took, kinda bummed me out a bit.... although i do like his street work like pictured above, the oils (which are usually appropriately referred to as oil on mixed media on canvas) just don't do it for me anymore (technically speaking) see more of his gallery work here: www.dfngallery.com/artists/artists_represented/dan_witz.htmAnyone care to comment further on this issue? My own thoughts on this are a bit muddled, and I was hoping that if a few more members could/would share their thoughts it might help me. I really like some of Dan's work, and have recently been in communication with Giuseppe at Wunderkammern Gallery in Rome about the possibility of purchasing one of the pieces on exhibit there. But I'm hesitating. There is no question that the piece I like is one of the "oil and digital media" paintings that sparked the comment by Joshua Liner Gallery. I think it's a personal preference. I don't like the idea because I have no way of knowing how much "painting" was done, although art is art so if you collect photography, I suppose this would just be a hybrid. I have the same mixed feeling about Ian Francis' work although not sure about the details of the complete process... |
