Hi all I had a look , and couldn't find anything about this fella here, so thought I would kick off a new thread. I have been admiring his work for a little while now, mainly photography, but with mixed media and incorporating found objects. He had a show with clearing at Armory NYC this year. I can't seem to add any pics, get exceeds maximum space limit, even if its well under 1mb.... link
and is in a group show at Night Gallery in LA - CULM with Sam Moyer and at Ritter Zamet in London - Equilibrium

I find it interesting that accidentally hurricane damaged prints nobody would have really cared about in their original state can be re-imagined post-damage and commoditized for $5k each. Yay for Sandy?

It's baffling.
To my mind, for these things to qualify as works of art, the creative act needs to have been deliberate in some sense. I don't mind deliberately harnessing chance or natural processes, but simply taking some discarded prints that got unintentionally damaged and rebranding them as novel works seems a step into the ridiculous.
Unless, maybe, his work (the rest of it) tends to have a subtext of commentary on what is and is not of value; but if it does, I haven't noticed.

If you look at his range of works before and after the hurricane, Foerster has been exploring decay and degradation in the photograph and photographic process. Both he and Brandt, I would even include Falls and Moyer, are forming an unofficial school relating photographic process and decay in their work. This short NY Times review gives some background. link

apparently Ryan Foerster won NADA Artadia prize. Don't know the relevance of that price? but worth mentioning it!

apparently Ryan Foerster won NADA Artadia prize. Don't know the relevance of that price? I guess the relevancy is that he was chosen by Alex Gartenfeld for it

I guess this thread may be through, but for what it's worth I think that the work is really strong now especially the mixed media/zine dimension. There was a show at Ribordy contemporary in Geneva at the end of last year that I really liked. My concern is whether the decay theme can be sustained over a long time, or whether it will just become a justification for creating some beautiful images. To me the works looks great and interesting now, but it will be interesting to see whether he can change tack again and add more depth to his practice. To declare an interest I have a small picture by him. Thanks.
