I'm looking forward to seeing her work at MOCAD next month. Her work reminds me of POSE's work, a little bit. (sans the graffiti influence)

The conversation about appropriation/plagiarism hasn't been settled. Jamian's appropriation doesn't seem like the "cool" appropriation of Prince, Charlesworth, or Levine. It might be more like Doeringer or Sturtevant except with more obscure references. instagram.com/imagetruths puts 2 images side by side. The discussion of race and all the interesting conceptual force, etc., comes directly from Bakshi, not Jamian. It isn't enough to talk about her work being "informed" by or "references" or is "influenced" by or "sourced." Jamian talks about wanting to do a book that lays out her "influences," but she'd probably have to pay some fees to use the images she puts in her paintings.

She's obviously incredibly talented ... although her work never really appealed to me that much ... and how much she's ripping off other artists it is just a little too close for comfort, hard to see the value in this now. I don't mind appropriation to a degree but this is just art for art's sake. It's almost pointless. Sturtevant was at least making a conceptual statement with her work although to me even that is a joke that got way too long in the tooth. How many copies of other artworks do you have to look at before you get bored? It reminds me of an incredibly talented guitarist, who can rip through scales and cover any song with style. But can't write an original song to save his life.
With the manipulation and exploitation going on in the hot young artist scene I guess I shouldn't be surprised by just how much her works have been fetching on paddle 8 but I thought it was more extreme than most. Let this be a lesson to all those flippers running up prices on these artists, it pays to vet your investments. But then again maybe all the flippers and manipulators will just ignore this and try to sweep it under the rug just like Jamian is trying to do.
Who knows maybe she'll redeem herself one day. But that ain't gonna happen till she changes her attitude.

got there early and got some decent pics... really cool show. The space is clearly too small for the works, which I think is intentional. Given the imagery and confined space it really makes for an anxious viewing experience (again, intentional imo). To me it was similar to an experience of channel surfing, searching for the perfect show to watch at a given time. The works keep your eyes darting back and forth in an effort to take in everything being presented. It'll take another visit, with more time to really dig into the work. A nice leap forward for Jamian showing she can nail it on any scale. Thanks for sharing these. i haven't been able to check out the show in person but from the photos ive seen i am a bit torn on the large scale works. something about it being this size comes off a bit as cheesy back drop stage design art. i think her style works for smaller pieces but these larger works seems to have the same content amount that her smaller works have but just blown up. just my opinion again and im sure viewing in person will be different.

Despite the controversy, I firmly believe that she is extremely talented and has a huge potential! She has a good taste in art
