i'm just fascinated by framing. i've framed my first piece and stretched my first canvas (sorta ) and i can't wait to do it again! i'm nervous about framing my first paper prints - i HATE white borders and artists love to sign there does anyone have any recently framed pieces to show? any philosophies on framing? here's mine - needs some work (gonna darken up the frame and restretch the canvas)

my philosophy on framing is to let someone else do it. I get frustrated too easily. Its hard enough for me to chose the frame, let alone fit the painting and worry about lining things up straight and correctly. DOnt even get me started on prints.

i have sooo many things that need framing. but i slack on it for fear of seeing the framing bill. (money for frames can be money used for art ) i definitely won't do it myself. the pros can take care of that. i tend to choose plexiglass and never let the artwork touch the glass. i hate that stella frames her stuff right against the glass. i'll try to float the piece and use spacers if it doesn't have white borders or use some sort of colored mat board. this isn't recent.. but it's one of my sol prints that i got done at the framing house.

It's so sad how bare my walls are considering all the nice PRINTS I have. Has anyone here ever taken taken a print out of frame? I ask because I've seen and heard some horror stories recently about the tape leading to damaged prints. I'll be honest it has me wondering if I'll ever frame up any of my Banksys or other prints worth 1000s of dollars. I know that conservation tape is supposed to come off easily, but again, I've heard stories recently to the contrary....

Hey wanted you guys' opinion on something. Wanted to reframe the Audrey I bought recently (why did I get the worse frame in the show???) To make it harder I want to frame my Oiran to match since they will be on the same wall. I actually liked the other frames at the show. Do you think any of the following three would be a good choice for the two paintings?

For some reason I don't think the middle one would go good with Oiran(though I love the piece thats in it). I'm leaning more toward the top one but the bottom frame could be just as good.

hmm.. choosing frames is tough. to be honest, i don't really like any of them to reframe yours. but if i had to choose, either the 1st or 3rd one. as for oiran, i would just leave it as is. it's a big piece with lots of detailing that stands well on its own. putting a frame on it might take away from the artwork. but if you did frame oiran, i'd choose a nice ornate black frame for it.

the lighting i'm sure changes the likelihood that they'll look like this, but this is my vote:

I would agree first or third would be the way to go. On a side note, i have a small canvas which I need to frame as the bottom 1.5 inch is unpainted and it really bothers me, where do you guys get your framing done, I am in Atlanta and all we have are major chain type stores and I would prefer a small type place. Also have a photo I need framed has anyone ever framed a large photo if so best way about it.

i'm more partial to the white frame. i also really like the natural frame audrey created with the wood on oiran. maybe think about framing around that?

If I didnt think twice I think 90% of my stuff would have white frames! (Although its more of an offwhite / cream colour.)

Hi Sleepboy, I'm in the minority here, but I think the frame that came with your piece is brilliant. Sure it's minimalist, but I went to the show and I thought it was not only refreshing but suits the art work really well.
The piece you purchased is actually my personal favorite from the whole show.
Maybe I'm just tired of the ornate stuff. Too me it's just overkill sometimes... Let the work speak for itself, you know...
Of the 3 options you provided: I would NOT go with option two. I see that frame EVERYWHERE. Those two pieces, "Not the only one" and "After the fire", were among my favorites. Yet, I wish a frame I'd never seen before was chosen for these pieces.
Just my 2 cents. : )

Wow, such a difference of opinion. I guess that's why framing is so subjective. I guess i'll take a home and look at it for a while and then look at different options. Thanks guys. I'll let you know what I decided.

Sleepboy, I'm having the same issue as you, though the art involved isn't as exciting. Want to reframe my two JLeds to match, but one of them is already framed in that "classic" JLed black frame, and the other is stretched on wood with the sides painted. I've actually emailed JLed but haven't heard back yet.
As far as your question, I think the new piece needs something very simple to really stand out, but Oiran can handle something much more ornate. I see them both looking great in lighter wood though... ash or blond. I kind of hate white frames though - they look cheap to me. (no offense since I know your Amy's have white frames)
My framing philosophy in general is to not spend any more than is necessary for the art to look good and the quality to be archival. I've only framed originals so far though, and all through Americanframe.com

Ok Los Angeles peeps....where do you get your stuff framed? I've heard both good and bad things about Framing House in Downtown. Has anyone been to Sherman Gallery and Frame Store?

So I finally got all my Audrey's together for a picture. They look OK but I think they will need to be reframed eventually into something a little more consistent. I will ponder on this for a while... Any suggestions welcome.
