An interesting installation by Espo. (via)Espo has constructed an epic installation placing Guantánamo Bay and the controversial torture technique know as waterboarding under some scrutiny. In Coney Island on West 12th Street just off Surf Ave you will come across some very cartoon-esq Espo work on the walls above some stairs and look past the metal bars you will find a portrayal of a cell in Guantánamo Bay. Upon the payment of a dollar you will see the installation in full impact, a manniquin shackled down in an orange jumsuit adorning a black hood that will for 15 seconds be uncompromisingly shaken while water is poured over the ambit mouth of the ‘prisoner’ simulate an interrogation method. Bringing some well needed attention to this cruel inhuman act may well be the annicdote the authorities need, so lets see how this audacious act is accepted by the public. I wonder if the dollar is so that they can pay the person who pours the water? That can't be a robot can it?

I picked up a cream print today; nice little buy, it made me smile.

earlier today, i stopped by at WW gallery and boy, ESPO's show is going to be "strong" like ESPO flexed his arm to me. even though some of his pieces aren't done yet, they bring the familiar style ESPO brings to the 415 area yet with new direction - america's recession. i think they're pretty strong coming out of ESPO's temporary factory. he had a few assistants working for him setting up a huge installation (i think it's going to be a big hit) and got plenty of well-known tags all over the walls... i stayed at the gallery for almost an hour observing how they worked around...
i have the feeling that anyone who enters into ESPO's show will come out with a happy face.

great image, and a good price too. i guess the edition size is quite large and that is why it is only £99. might pick one of these up.

I have to say seeing this come to life really got me thinking. This was a full on community effort. He had the transit people help him to say nothing of putting up all those pieces and to connect them using the train is pure genius. I really hope this will be up this summer when I'm in Philly, and for much longer. Who knows maybe it will produce others to make more love letters in Philly, like the cartoon murals in Brussels.

Without a doubt, Love Letter is the most moving and ambitious public art project I've ever personally experienced. None of the murals have been tagged or buffed yet, so hopefully it'll stay up for good. And Steve said that they have more permissions, and may continue to put up new murals.

I am really thinking since Josh keyes escapes me regularly I need to place my energy into something from ESPO, his work is really great and the Love Letters has really made me a bigger fan. Drop Simon at Show and Tell a line. He should be able to assist. But yeah, the Love Letters project is really really amazing. What I found most awesome about the available items on his site was the Love Letters book, A Love Letter for You. Didn't even know this existed. Grabbed one the other day and can't wait for it to show up. A Love Letter For You – Brick Valentines On The Philly Skyline documents the art and the neighborhood that inspired this ambitious public art project. In 1984 Steve Powers started climbing rooftops in his neighborhood and painting his alias ESPO as a dues paying member of the ICY graffiti club. 25 years later he returned home to Philadelphia in the summer of 2009 to write a love letter across the same rooftops facing the Market-Frankford line. The letter, meant for one, with meaning for all, encompasses 50 walls on a 20 block stretch of market street. Drawing input, inspiration, and work from the community Powers created a letter to and from west Philly. This unprecedented public art project was a collaboration of Powers, The Mural Arts Program, and the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage. It required 1200 cans of spray paint, 800 gallons of bucket paint, and the skilled hands of 20 of the finest spray painters in America, who Powers put into the legendary ICY club. Softcover 9.25″ x 6.25″ 96 pages Over 100 full color images $19.95
