Phillip Singer
Sanctuary
September 19th – October 17th, 2020
Haven Gallery is honored to present "Sanctuary", a solo show of oil paintings by the 2020 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize Winner, Phillip Singer. "Sanctuary" consists of eight original artworks that feature various species of animals cavorting in both the landscape and within interior spaces. The imaginative worlds found in Singer's work bend reality and beckon the viewer to re-think life and the world itself. This is so beautifully achieved by the artist's brilliant use of natural color, a fine dedication to detail, and an approach to painting found most notably within old master artwork. It is through the merging of the known and unknown by Singer's hand, that we are presented with a sanguine and tranquil depiction of our natural world.
Singer's surreal twist on what we know and have been conditioned to understand invigorates our imagination and expands our understanding of reality. Notions of surrealism intermingle with reflections on environmental change and highlight the adaptation of life and expression of hope. These visuals and their stories are a reminder to us, as humans, to think beyond what is directly in front of us and open our hearts and minds to the possibilities of not just the world around us, but that within ourselves.
Artist Statement:
"My attraction to the absurdity of surrealism has never been stronger.
People always ask if the paintings represent dreams that I've had. They do not, but I wish they did. They are, however, a culmination of a relentless question. "What if situations really occurred like this?" I am constantly looking at the objects around me and juxtaposing them to subtly call attention to an aspect of reality that we haven't thought of before. I mentally toss ideas in the air, and eventually something connects. It might be just an interest in the main subject or it might be related to something going on in the world at large.
I am currently drawn to science and reason as it tries to explain the the world around us. I find great comfort there. For me science is a sanctuary of sorts. These paintings provide me with hope that in a world that seems absurd, there is a way forward."
ABOUT PHILLIP SINGER
"I have only just begun to create the art I have always dreamed of." — Phillip Singer
Phillip Singer was always fascinated by the beauty, as well as the individuality, of fine art. As a child, his early impressions and inspiration came from the few art books his parents' had on hand. The work of great masters and famous illustrators captured his young imagination. Encouraged by his parents and teachers, Singer eventually earned a full scholarship to the School of Visual Arts in New York. "Art was one thing I was truly passionate about. I wasn't sure if I could ever be good enough to be a professional artist, but the challenge gave me focus and direction in my life."
While studying at the School of Visual Arts, Singer was included in the Society of Illustrators student show, and won the school's portfolio cover competition in his senior year. His professional illustration career started the day after graduation and spanned the last 15 years. His illustrations include over 100 book covers for Avon-Harper Collins, Warner Books, and Simon & Schuster. Singer had done numerous magazine illustrations for clients such as National Geographic Magazine, and created promotional illustrations for international corporations such as Celestial Seasonings Tea and Merck. His work has been selected many times to participate in the prestigious Society of Illustrators Annual Award Show.
But could a successful illustrator transition to the world of fine art? Singer took the plunge and the Singer Fine Art Collection made its debut in 1999 at a handful of fine art festivals on the East Coast. Featuring original oil paintings and limited-edition prints, the meticulous attention to detail of the paintings is reminiscent of the old masters, but the imaginative, surrealistic subject matter is truly unique. "I like to paint living things which breathe and pulse with life and place them in curious situations. I think the juxtaposition creates a thought-provoking sense of surreal- ism. But the image of the painting is only half the equation. The other half is technique. With every painting, I try to emulate the awe-inspiring vivid beauty and breath-taking dimension achieved by the old masters. This is why I believe I have only just begun to create the art I have always dreamed of."
Singer is now strictly a fine artist with a discerning, growing following. "I like to see some- thing new every time I look at a painting. That's why in each painting I create, I strive for beauty, yet hope the audience also finds it challenging, bold, smart, funny, and imaginative. When you find the 'unexpected' in a piece of art, that makes it worth taking home."
Singer recently was awarded the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize in September 2020.

Daria Aksenova
Northport, NY– Haven Gallery is pleased to present Houston based artist, Daria Aksenova for her second solo show at the gallery. Aksenova's latest body of shadowboxes utilizes her affection for narrative as a link between animals and humans through various branches of folklore. Both visual and thematic elements of these stories can be found in the presence of clothing, masks and characters. Mythologies stemming from Russia, Japan and the Chinese zodiac are noted in the artists surreal characters and garb, while the her own personal narrative find itself woven throughout each shadowbox.
About Daria's Process:
Daria's works are known as shadowboxes. The artist inks (both fine line and ink washes) her imagery before she meticulously cuts it out to layer and suspend in a deep set, framed shadowbox built by her own hands. Each artwork is comprised of multiple layers that allow her to create immense depth and movement. It is through her multiple layers and masterful line work that a cinematic dimension of imagination and story are brought to life.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I have always been fascinated with storytelling, starting with childhood bedside fables and mythology. Two years ago, seeking a new challenge, I undertook creating a narrative arc within a static medium, using principles I learned from my previous industries: fashion and film.
My mission is to bring back our childhood imaginations that are drowned out by the everyday bustle in our ever-busy lives. I choose my settings and subject material to draw the viewer back to the folk lore and myths of their youth, hoping to create artwork that inspires the dreamer within.
ABOUT DARIA AKSENOVA
Daria Aksenova is best known for her suspended paper narrative compositions in ink. In the heart of Houston's newly renovated creative studios, she displays a unique treasure of imagination. The current focus of her work takes on the creation of dynamic movement in a static medium, drawing from her past experience with the fashion and film industries. It is her intent that cinematographic storytelling arises from the layers and complexity of the composition. These pull in both the eye and mind, presenting a space and opportunity for the imagination to wander into a deep narrative that can only be experienced first hand.
Daria Aksenova uses ink as it is an unforgiving medium that precludes editing and demands precision. Individual elements are then hand-cut with a scalpel and suspended against each other until the desired depth is achieved. Her technique demands a steady hand and unfailing commitment, often requiring over a hundred hours of dedication and intimacy with each piece.
The subject matter is chosen by a fascination with mythology and folklore. Her pieces evoke a dreamscape-like narrative to serve as a vehicle to transport the viewer back to past, more carefree times, outside the limitations of the everyday world

Mall, "Elements"
Northport, NY– Haven Gallery is pleased to present "Elements", a solo show of new work from Philippines based artist Mall. "Elements" is Mall's her second solo show at the gallery and will feature fifteen new mixed media resin artworks. Mall's resin work takes on the qualities of both paintings and sculptures as she alternates layers of paint, Washi tape and resin to create a suspended moment in time. Female protagonists in elaborate kimonos frolic, dance and intermingle with principals of nature such as flowers, patterns, animals. A nod to her exhibition title, the artist plays with elements of sky, earth, air and weather as a means to set the stage for her whimsical compositions. These gracefully painted moments in Mall's work are melodically alluring and designed to transport both artist and viewer into a world of dreams and harmony.
About Mall's Process:
Mall layers paint and washi tape between layers of resin. She does this in trays and plates locally sourced in the Philippines. Her use of resin and its transparent nature allows her to build delicate layers that suspend her female figures amidst the natural world surrounding them. This technique allows for a three dimensional presentation highly inspired by traditional Japanese aesthetics, the stylization of anime and manga and their contemporary narratives.

"We're Not Meant to Remember"
September 19th – October 17th, 2020
Haven Gallery is pleased to present "We're Not Meant to Remember", a solo show of original work by Northport based artist Joseph Weinreb. "We're Not Meant to Remember" is Weinreb's first solo show at the gallery and will consist of 12 oil paintings exhibiting narratives ingrained in both history and mythology, that are presented in non linear and phantasmagorical constructs. Weinreb's work is known for its fusion of three time periods: the past, present and future. Bygone eras and lives intermingle with contemporary events while echoes of the future, specifically the human connection to space exploration, send ripples through our understanding of memory and time. Weinreb begs both himself and his viewer to question their own perception of sequential events and how our own memories alter our perception and being. What we retain, how these recollections change as they are passed down and how much they transform in the individual's mind, are factors of consideration and contemplation. A questioning of how much we truly remember and why, is toyed with and explored through Weinreb's body of work.
Time is a major theme found throughout this collection and the artists portfolio. Phases of life are represented through skeletal beings, futuristic landscapes, ebullient and strong female personifications and abundances of nature, resulting in a distortion of linear sequences. He links all of these elements together in these deeply personal yet universally manifested narratives that asks us, as humans, to rethink what we know and break down our personal tenets and convictions. Weinreb's playful juxtaposition of the past with echoes of the future, bridge the gap between what we as humans have learned and what remains beyond our purview during contemporary times.
ABOUT JOSEPH WEINREB
Joseph Weinreb was born in New York in 1984. He is a self taught oil painter who finds inspiration from the work of the Old Masters, the Surrealists, comics, anime and science fiction. He has exhibited in galleries within the US for the last five years.
Weinreb's work harks back to the past in both technique and theme. Each painting consists of multiple layers and glazing techniques that build up and develop his lifelike yet stylized surfaces. His work is known for its nebulous depiction of a time neither here nor there that challenges our own perception of memory and reality.
