I do commissions. At the end of the day, I feel commissions benefit everyone around. It's a different "type" of art work.
I do have to say though, I personally believe the artist should be thorough with what they provide. However, and unfortunately, I'm afraid this scares some people off sometimes. If someone inquires about a commission and then changes their mind, they should bring it to the artists' attention... as often times the artist plans ahead for these things.
It's quite a different story from the other side of the spectrum—one that is often neglected or overlooked by the buyer. It's one thing to drop dime on something because you have the money and want the product, when the artist is trying to just break even just by getting their name out there.
Let's not forget... artists who sell work are self employed. This means roughly 30% of the sale is gone in taxes. Many self-employed artists also don't have health insurance, which they are paying for out of pocket. Then there's the cost of self promotion, etc.
Just things to consider if someone supports an artist's work and wants them around long enough to continue making it for people.
But I digress...

After reading everyones posts I have to say some great points made and I have really learned alot and took alot into consideration. I fully agree if an artist is getting ready for a solo show that it should of course take presidence over a commission however I also think artists should not take commission if they know they have to take a solo show on. I would also agree I would prefer the artist to do a solo show as the exposure would be great and really help out my work of art as someone said. Finally I should have asked and agreed on a date as far as when the work would be completed, since going back and fourth with the gallery we have come up with a date of May 12 to get it finish and shipped. I have learned alot with doing this commission and will do more in the future should I get the chance.
