Big Trouble in Bergamot Station?
I tried getting some more info on Bergamot’s possible future status in regards to MTA light rail expansion after LAist ran this story a few weeks back, but all I was sick and seeing purple elephants and all that, and it merged into my malarial madness.
I got an E-mail today from a very, very concerned staff member of the excellent Santa Monica Museum of Art, someone whom I have incredible respect for, making it clear that there is really a need for public comment immediately, as the decision of where to place a maintenence facility is being made this Friday, March 27. Which is like, this Friday! And public comments must be submitted by March 25, which is Tomorrow! Anyways, here’s the email with all the links you need to make it clear how important Bergamot Station is and has been to the entire Southern California region.
In a recent article in the Santa Monica Daily Press www.smdp.com/Articles-c-2009-03-09-50584.113116_From_one_destiny_to_another.html, it came to our attention that there is the possibility that the Exposition Construction Authority (MTA) would consider razing Bergamot Station in order to house a maintenance facility for their cars when light rail comes to the West Side. This would be devastating to the Santa Monica Museum of Art and the 35+ other galleries and businesses housed here. It would also impact those who enjoy our arts community, partake in events and educational programs, and consider Bergamot Station a place for everyone to enjoy. Please help me to fight this from happening! The decision of where to place a maintenance facility will be decided on Friday, March 27. Currently, the MTA is compiling an Environmental Impact Report and the process is open for public comment so the opportunity to voice your opinion is still open and your support can make an enormous difference!
We are very much in favor of the completion of Phase 2 of the Exposition Rail Line—the part that will indeed bring light rail from Culver City to Santa Monica. However, it is imperative that both the Exposition Construction Authority and the government of the City of Santa Monica understand how important Bergamot Station is to the cultural life of Los Angeles.
Attached please find a draft of a letter that clearly states our support of light rail, but that we do not want it to adversely affect Bergamot. Please customize the letter and send it to the following emails BY MARCH 25 (yes, tomorrow!):
I am writing to request your help us prevent the placement of an MTA Light Rail maintenance facility at the Bergamot Station Arts Complex, which would result in the eviction of its tenants (yes, that means SMMoA and all of the galleries)
We’ve tried to make it easy:
1) Here is a link to the ARTSFORLA.com Take Action site:
