Great looking pieces. BTW, what is the guy on the left staring at? I hope the label with Barry's name on it. Otherwise not sure...

it's typically only one in ten of his clusters over the past couple years that i truly love and would want on my wall. but these things are pretty terrible. clearly he's trying to mix things up a bit with some new ideas, undoubtedly concerned with the fact that he's been rehashing the same compositions for too long. not sure it's working imo..which is unfortunate as i'm a huge fan of barry.

Funny, I totally disagree. I am a big fan of the new-ish stuff. The more minimal stuff has a frank stella / robert mangold vibe going on. I dig that. Which works of his do you prefer?

i really like these pieces for Basel. I haven't been in love with all of the newer stuff, but I think he has done a great job in refining the new ideas in these works. i love the new style geometric patterns on the spray can cluster. all of this stuff looks clean and fresh to me.

absolutely cannot stand those middle eastern vessel that sprung up at the past two shows. and those brand new multi color hexagonal panels, while i like them, remind me too much of something johanson would do on paper or resemble too closely a couple recent fwy pieces. did love the clusters from both london and venice that were composed exclusively of the red concentric rings. but they don't work for me with more representational panels too. this would be a dream piece for me, which i am still vaguely considering. and while it was these increasingly ubiquitous compositions it seems he's diverting from, these are the type of clusters i prefer. one from bolinas i'll forever regret passing on. just cannot stand dealing with ratio. and one from prism that were what i like. as i alluded, i am extremely picky when it comes to clusters i'd really want to spring for and enjoy on my walls. but i applaud him continuing to try new things, even if they're not for me. he needed to attempt to refresh things a bit.

I heard the pieces at Basel all sold for around $60K? That's a pretty big jump no? Barry definitely deserves it tho.

Just looking at info on the SFMOMA show Barry's in this month, I noticed this funny, albeit apparently old, video footage of him in part using football as a parable for graffiti. www.sfmoma.org/explore/multimedia/videos/467

Barry's CV @ Cheim&Read notes that this show is traveling to Boston (ICA) and NY (Brooklyn Museum): i1.exhibit-e.com/cheimread/McGee_Barry_Biography_9_9_11.pdfIt seems like the date for Barry's retrospective exhibition at Berkeley Art Museum has been set in the stone: Sept. 2012-December 2012. www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/press/scheduleFrom BAMPFA's press room: "Barry McGee September 2012 through December 2012 BAM/PFA’s midcareer retrospective of influential San Francisco-based artist Barry McGee will provide an opportunity to explore two decades of the artist’s formal, material, and thematic development. McGee began sharing his work in the 1980s, not in a museum or gallery setting but on the streets of San Francisco, where he developed his skills as a graffiti artist, often using the tag name “Twist.” McGee uses a vocabulary drawn from comics, hobo art, sign painting, and graffiti to address a range of issues, from individual survival to social malaise to alternative forms of community. He is that rare artist who has made the transition from public to private space, from outdoors to indoors, without compromising aesthetics or intent. McGee’s extraordinary skill as a draughtsman is balanced by an interest in pushing the boundaries of art: his work can be shockingly informal in the gallery and surprisingly elegant on the street. As unconventional as its subject, BAM/PFA’s retrospective reimagines McGee’s most influential installations. McGee will reunite with previous collaborators, aliases, and materials to create a dynamic theater that challenges the boundaries of the exhibition space. Strategically bringing detritus from the cityscape into the orderly spaces of the museum, he plans to adapt these installations to the unique architecture of BAM/PFA. The exhibition centers around seven major installations, plus a tower of one hundred television sets; animatronic taggers; a 150-foot three-dimensional cluster of paintings, drawings, and photographs; and an exterior graffiti mural covering the gallery’s façade of windows, visible from both inside and outside. Adjacent galleries will display a selection of McGee’s work from the 1990s to the present, including a number of rarely seen early works, many collaborative projects, and some unexpected media. Curated by BAM/PFA Director Lawrence Rinder, the project will include a touring exhibition, a major catalog, and extensive public programs." Do I sense a future AM gathering from all over the world? Guess it's good time to save some $$$ to fly out to San Francisco for any of you McGee fans! Wow, sounds like the mother of all Mcgee shows. May have to head up there for this...

Barry has a show at Ratio 3 in September 2012. oddly, i randomly spotted that yesterday on their site too. originally, the bam/pfa retro was scheduled to open in sept, so didn't know what to make of the ratio gig. but now looks like the retro has been revised again forward to aug-dec (http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/press/schedule). so prob a legit commercial show too. sf is def the place to be for mcgee this year. not sure where i found this image the other day and is prob old..but it couldn't be him working already at bam, right? way too early? if so, anyone know where this install was from?
