LeBasse Projects presents:
“Hello and Goodbye”
A solo exhibition by Yoskay Yamamoto
May 9th – May 28th
Artist reception: Saturday, May 9th, 7-10p
Los Angeles, CA – LeBasse Projects is proud to announce, Hello and Goodbye, a solo exhibition from Japanese artist Yoskay Yamamoto. This will be the artist’s second major solo exhibition, and will mark his largest body of work to date both in size and scale. The show represents a breakthrough in work from Yamamoto, and will reflect a continuation of intimate statements of self-expression that began in his last exhibition.
Yamamoto’s previous exhibition focused on the artists’ internal struggle while Hello and Goodbye is inspired by a more external series of experiences. Being born and raised in suburban Japan and now living in Los Angeles, Yamamoto is challenged by feelings of separation both personally, culturally and artistically. There remains an unending cycle of connection and disconnection with the world around Yamamoto. As he becomes more disconnected with his Japanese roots he becomes more connected to his adopted American lifestyle, yet being away from his family helps him understand their true value and importance thus creating an even deeper connection.
Yamamoto states, “There are times when separation helps me to connect - to grow and understand myself better, and there are situations when attachments make me feel powerless and weak...This balance and the conflict between connection and disconnection fascinates me.” The works in his second solo exhibition are a cohesive series of paintings that confronts both sides of this cycle. The artistic techniques Yamamoto incorporates in his paintings echo these themes, as we see a push and pull of color, character, depth and medium. Yamamoto will be including a series of hand sculpted mixed media installations designed to compliment his traditional paintings as well.
The emotion that Yamamoto pours into his work has turned him into one of the most buzz-worthy emerging artists working today. With shows booked into 2010 from New York to Los Angeles to Paris, and appearances coming at Art Basel, in Scion’s Installation Tour and a sold out designer vinyl sculpture, Yamamoto is undoubtedly on a fast track to being a must own for any collector of contemporary art.
