Roq la Ruepresents "Lush Life"painting group show opens May 8th - runs through June 6th Email me to be on a preview list:kirsten@roqlarue.com While many galleries in the "underground"/Pop Surrealism art scene have increasing turned towards the immediacy of street art, Roq la Rue has decided to instead focus on the more formal, Symbolist -inspired painters in the genre. "Lush Life" brings together painters in both the alt-art world as well as contemporary art scene, who all work within a guideline of tight technical craftsmanship as well as a sense of opulent and decadent imagery to convey both higher inner and societal truths and emotions. This "Neo-Symbolism" is different from it's predecessor in that while it still mines the unconscious for a sense of mythic gravitas, it incorporates American culture's pervasive pop culture-flavored and cartoony aesthetic. Artists include Joe Sorren Chris Berens Chris Conn Askew Mia Araujo, Melissa Forman Travis Louie Madeline Von Foerster Martin Wittfooth Kukula Ryan Heshka John Brophy Tin Brian Despain Glenn Barr Dan Quintana Femke Hiemstra Laurie Hogin Lisa Petrucci Andrew Arconti.image: Laurie Hogin "Field Gude to Cosmetics and Pharamceuticals: Pink Mockingbird"

I do not connect with most street art myself. My taste gravitates towards painters that tell stories, inventing other worlds. I need beauty to pull me in. Your "Lush Life" show is just my cup of tea. What a Lush Line Up of Talent, mind blowing roster.
Laurie Hogin's "Field Gude to Cosmetics and Pharamceuticals: Pink Mockingbird" is eye candy supreme.
As usual Miss La Rue rocks the house. You are the Mary Boone of our generation Miss La Rue ;D

Now that I know the above Berens, The New Ones, is spoken for and I don't have a chance at it, I'll happily hype it. Ha. All I can say is...WOW! Love the nature theme going on it, for which there has certainly been to a lesser extent in some of Chris' previous work, at least with all the new found wildlife popping up. But the hardwood trees, the green shrubs, the fungus, the flowers....just phenomenal! It's definitely as close to a dream Berens for me as I've seen yet....something which makes me very excited for what the future will hold as he further develops his narrative and harnesses his vision. The last four paintings - these two and the two Copro pieces (well 1 and 3/4s of them) - have been next level for me. The man has a gift!!
I've said it before...but I'll say it again, and echo Tom's sentiments, Kirsten rules...and I can't thank you enough for bringing Mr. Berens to the attention of this community.
