Hi everyone, Due to the recession, and far too many galleries and art stores having to close, I've decided (against my partners wishes) to slash the prices to help promote more shows and artists, and hopefully it'll have a positive effect. I've worked out the absolute minimum we need to keep going, and I've decided to halve the ratecard prices we have on our site, so it's - $250 for a 1/4 page
- $500 for a 1/2 page
- $1000 for a full page
- $800 for the inside front/inside back cover
- $1200 for the back cover.
If anyone can think of any shows or artists that could do with a hand, please feel free to pass it on. All the best! Tom

Hi Tom, This is unrelated to advertising in Dangerous Ink... I just wanted to say I love the magazine. I purchased issue 2 a couple nights ago at my local newsstand. And I was blown away by the Laurie Lipton interview. These interviews are epic length and really in-depth. I read the awesome interview with Leslie Ditto in issue 1 and was hoping that was no fluke. Issue 2 did not dissappoint. Laurie Lipton and her work are really quite brilliant. Now I deeply regret passing up on her show last year at Copro Nason. I don't know how you are able to elicit such inspired and illuminating responses in these interviews, but keep up the great work. It is really unlike Hi Fructose or Juxtapoz which are mostly softball questions... which too often leads to vacuous answers. I was disappointed in the Joslin interviews though. That experiment did not work, IMO - some of the questions asked of each other were plain embarrassing " If you painted me as a clown, what would I look like?" Overall, maybe it wasn't that bad, but the words were not 1/10th as interesting as their art work. But like I said, that Lipton interview was worth the price of the magazine itself. Hopefully, the number of pages (and interviews) will increase in later issues.

Hi,
Cheers for that. I was happy with how Jared and Jessical interviewed each other, but as they are husband and wife, there was an intimacy there which I liked (though it wasn't as indepth as we usually go).
Laurie was great to interview, and I was honoured by how much she opened up to me during the interview process.
We're hoping to increase the page count, and in turn the number of interviews, but that relies entirely on advertising. Unfortunately our main avenue is galleries, but most have long-term ties with Jux that they don't want to break. Fair enough; they've been around longer.
To be honest though, I can't say for sure if we can get the next issue out. My business partner left recently, and I'm back to doing the advertising myself, along with the day-to-day running of the mag.
I'll have to decide in the next week whether I'll keep going, but at this rate, it looks like we're going to fold.
Thanks again for buying the mag, and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
All the best,
Tom

Hi, I'll have to decide in the next week whether I'll keep going, but at this rate, it looks like we're going to fold. That would really suck. I may be able to take out a 1/4 page ad to help, but can you think of some way that we, the artist and collector community, can help? I think there is definitely room in the scene for a magazine like Dangerous Ink. If you have any ideas, let us know.

Hey Chet,
Cheers for replying. To be honest, I'm stumped about how we can continue.
The basic equation for any mag is (content + advertising = mag). Simple on paper, but a bugger to actually produce. Every time we've had an artist with an upcoming show, we contacted their galleries to offer some of our promo spots, but no-ones ever taken us up (except for Rivet Gallery one time). Fair enough - times are tough, and if galleries aren't expecting to sell many pieces, it's a waste to advertise the show in a maagzine.
If anyone here has any ideas, please give me a shout. At this point I'm running stumped.
All the best,
Tom

bummer man How about someone donating an o/g piece to run as a prize to people taking out a subscription? I'm a graphic designer and if you need any help putting it together I'll gladly help?

Cheers for the idea, but the amount of subscriptions we'd need just to meet the next bill makes it unworkable. We'd be looking at near 1,000 subscriptions alone. Oof!
To be honest, even though I’ve given myself another week to see how things go, I’m already planning how to wind things up. There may have been room at one point for another mag, but with the competition sucking up all the advertising, and no-one wanting to take a chance on a different publication, it looks like Jux and HF are going to be the only games in town from now on.
Hell, I gave it a shot and got 6 issues out, with 2 of them having the widest North American distribution as any UK mag has ever seen, so I can’t complain too much.
All the best, and thanks for everything!
Tom

I would donate a piece...perhaps take a collection of og's from different artists? Just seems kind of a shame since you probably would not be having this problem if it were not for the current state of the economy. If you could just hang in there a little longer...

Lord I really hate hearing this news Tom, I know how hard you have worked at keeping things going. You really put out a beautiful magazine and I would hate to see it fold. As always, if there is anything I could do. I know time is ticking, but I would also consider donating a piece of work for maybe an auction or something.

Hi Chet and Leslie,
Thank you so much for both your generous offers of artwork. It’s actually overwhelming to get that kind of support, and I may take you up on your kind offers.
It’s a lot of work for me to get through, and raising £10,000 ($16,000) is going to be really tough. The upside though it that the printer only needs ¼ after printing, then I can pay the rest up when the distributor pays, but it’s still going to be an uphill struggle.
Hi Droow,
No luck there I'm afraid. I got financial aid to start the mag, so Business Link can't offer any more help. Even though the magazine is non-profit, the Arts Councils of Scotland and England consider us a business, and won't let me apply for anything. Typical short-sighted arts council beaurocrats if you ask me.
I've tried brewers since way back with the very first issue, but they consider us too small, and with no ABC accreditation, they won't even consider taking a chance. Funny thing; the bigger some companies or galleries are, the more they try and push you into giving them adverts for free. Ridiculous situation.
Cheers,
Tom

We could donate a few limited editions if it would help.

Tom, I can donate limited edition prints also. I have stuff from Esao Andrews, Fuco Ueda, Richard Kirk, etc that I'm willing to let you have. It's not much, but you can keep 'em either way (I imagine there are costs with winding things down as well). Send me a PM with your mailing address and I'll get stuff sent your way within a day or so. You can keep the items for later resale, or just for yourself in appreciation of a valiant effort with the magazine I would recommend that you add a link to your website's front page that would allow us to donate a few dollars to the cause. Preferably a "Paypal" button... or your Paypal email address. I think you'd be surprised how inclined people would be to donate, especially to a non-profit organization supporting the arts.

Cheers, Tom It looks like some folks here are stepping up to the plate. That is very cool. We should do this. I could ask around for some of my other art buddies to donate...even sketches. If it's an ebay auction or something that has a piece of my work in, I could promote it to my mailing list and probably get it on Tool's news page. Plus I have like 30,000 myspace friends to promote to at this point, so maybe a donation page like entropy mentioned and an auction.....? If you are talking $4000 to start (1/4 for the printer), we could definitely make it happen pretty easily.

Andrew, I just love your work, amazing and beautiful!
Tom, an idea that might speed things up is, instead of me sending you the painting ( which takes time ) I could email you an image with the title and a brief statement about the piece and then if you decide to do an ebay auction , I could send the painting directly from my house to the winner so it will be less trouble and stress on you, with everything you are having to go through right now, it might help and like I said, it might speed things up too and get the ball rolling. If you think it's a good idea then you might get other people that want to donate art or prints to do the same.Just an idea

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the overwhelming positive response. It's greta to know thre are people out there who feel as strongly about the magazine as I do.
If everyone is ok with it, I'd like to take up all your kind offers of donating art for an online auction. Would everyone be up for going with Leslie's suggestion of emailing me an image of the art, with a brief statement of the piece?
Thank you again everyone for all the help, and consider yourselves on a free lifetime of Dangerous Ink!
All the best!
Tom

Hey Leslie and Chet,
Cheers for doing that. I'll look out for your emails.
I'm still completely overwhelmed by the support you, and everyone else, have shown. I never knew people felt so strongly about the magazine. You guys have shown me there IS room on the shelf for another magazine next to Jux and HF.
All the best!
