Our art collection was supposed to be picked up this morning to be shipped to LA, but the handlers didn't show, and so I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the Francis Bacon Retrospective (It's Amazing). The real treat however was Michelangelo's first painting, The Torment of Saint Anthony. The painting is believed to have been created when he was only 12 or 13 years old. Anyone else see some Robert Williams (maybe some Matt Furie) in this? Can we keep Michelangelo in the Low Brow/Pop Surrealism thread? The painting is up in the museum through September 7th. Here's an article about the piece from the Guardian. www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2009/may/13/art-michelangelo-torment-saint-anthony

While I applaud your posting about this interesting painting, I really feel that this thread should be in the General Discussion area. If we keep Michelangelo in the Lowbrow/Pop Surrealism section, we may as well start threads for each of the hundreds of other artists who influenced the early lowbrow and pop surrealist painters.
So I'm moving it now... sorry, gildoinc.

Wow, to paint something like this at only 12 years old says a lot. To paint something using the subject matter of a priest being accosted by demons at age 12 is pretty crazy, and secondly he really was born an artist. Thanks for sharing. Got any Bacon pics? I'm a huge fan of Francis' work.

That's a really incredible painting, 12 years old, my god! Funny you should mention Robert William as he did a painting called "Temptations of Saint Anthony"

I have always felt that the Temptation of St. Anthony is one of the deepest influences of this genre. (Though of course this particular painting could not be among the influences, as it was not well known until now.) Painters throughout history have used this subject as an excuse to really pull out all the stops, from 10th-century Italian fresco painters to the 20th century surrealists. Here are some of the more iconic of the thousands of Temptations of St. Anthony that have been painted over the years: Martin Schongauer (this is the drawing " Michelangelo" was copying) Hieronymous Bosch (center, left and right) Salvador Dali Max Ernst Salvator Rosa Matthias Grünewald Henri Fantin-Latour Paul Cezanne Lovis Cornith Pieter Brueghel the Elder Jan Brueghel the Elder Jan Brueghel the Younger Jan Mandyn Felicien Rops Leonora Carrington Dorothea Tanning Lucas Cranach the Elder Marten de Vos Niklaus Manuel Deutsch Tintoretto Giovanni Battista Tiepolo
