I hate to say this having committed a significant down payment to a commission 18 months ago that's yet to arrive but, with the exception of the huge triptych and the large mandala in the bottom photo, the rest of this new work is a bit meh.

After hitting up the opening last night, I have the exact opposite sentiments. The precision really is next level and awe-striking. Finally being able to soak in an entire body of work in person has replenished my patience and allowed me to realize how lucky I am to even have an opportunity at one of his pieces with the massive demand these days, especially in light of my experiences in attempting to procure something from this show. But on a personal level, more so than any of the compositional themes and color palettes he's experimented with since the 09 Honor show, it is these current iterations that I feel is his strongest and most unique ever. I could now wait another year and be content. Let's hope that doesn't happen though oh and my mom makes a cameo twice in your video, along with my sexy back at one point.

i am really impressed with this new body of work. actually sort of blew my mind for a few different reasons. I think it is even more evidence of how deep of an arsenal KAWS has. no matter what he does, from street to product to gallery, everything is carefully thought out and executed flawlessly. I also love how if you track all the different styles/eras of his work over the years the viewer can still see how it all relates and and builds from the work before it. not all artists do this. he has extreme focus on his vision, which is why I think his work can and does resonate with such a wide variety of people. really makes me even more salty that I was unable to get anything from the show.

If someone knows that info, could you please PM me.. Thanks! $16,000 More like 16k x 25..or 400k if you really wanted a shot at them, due to the fact that they were only selling them either in a complete set of 50 or in a couple broken down sets. initially had got word they might break off a couple as singles, but don't think that ever happened.

Can't help but think 50 circular pieces is kinda flooding the market. It used to be so hard to get a KAWS painting. Not so much anymore.
Some of these tondos are pretty cool tho.

for all this big stuff and the installations like these circular pieces, doesn't he just have about 5 friends building a market for him? conversely everyone else thinks he's in demand, and demand increases. kaws is the perfect example of the hype machine being used to sell art. or am i just too cynical about kaws?

I don't know if I would go so far as to say that. There is a wide demand for him from a large demographic. I would say that KAWS close friends that you may be referring to are able to just buy art directly from him. While this may have helped him in the past when he wasn't doing gallery work, I would guess that he doesn't even have time to do this anymore. As far as the big sculptures and large pieces, I think he is just in a position with his career both creatively and financially where he can do works like this and test his limits and not worry about the work "needing" to sell. It is just another idea he is executing. With KAWS though, more often than not they seem to be successful. I don't know this to be fact, but just what I sort of gather from following things.

I know many people that were disappointed. I'm always trying to buy a piece. The right piece. Was offered tondos from this show but after much thought, they just didn't feel special enough for me. I think it was the fact that 50 similar ones would be floating out at the same time. And yes, the demand is certainly there for KAWS. If he made 200 of these, they would've gone immediately. For me, I'd rather hold out, pay a bit more and get a really unique canvas.
