I went to this show before going to the Parla opening last night - the Kaws paintings were executed well but, the sculptures are definately a joke (imho). Also, I was in and out of there in 5 minutes flat - including the time I spent in the bathroom taking a piss. Overall, I wasn't impressed and won't be seeing anymore Kaws shows.
... by the way, what did you think of the parla show? i've read elsewhere that people were disappointed by both the space and the content, but would be interested to hear your views...
I fully loved the Parla show, Sven. It wasn't exactly a spiritual experience but, pretty darn close! I had never seen his work before in person - the layering is out of this world - just focusing my eyes on a few square inches of one of the canvases and I could literally get lost for what seemed like a very long time. Abstract art never really rang a chord with me until I saw his work (online and now in person) and I've got to say, if there is one and only one artist whose work I'd like to see hanging in my home - or anywhere for that matter, I'd at this point in my life, choose Parla's.
He was a real nice guy - signed a few books for me - I was one of the first people in there - overheard one woman say she has five commissioned paintings from Jose - all before he became as well known as he is now - I've got to say that had I seen his work years ago I wouldn't have hesitated to purchase as much and as many pieces as I could - regardless of the value of them now - they are mindblowing - at least my brain was expanded in directions I didn't know it could go without the aid of certain things....
I don't know why others may have not enjoyed the show but, it gets my seal of approval for sure. If you're in nyc, check it out -

don't know if people saw this yet but apparently Lance Armstrong's Livestrong is teaming up with artists for sneakers, bikes, and posters. Kaws adds his touch to a bike
