must admit...that guy is pretty damn impressive. if only they weren't 120k looks damn impressive, indeed..esp because these were actually cast in bronze this time, as opposed to the fiberglass 8 and 10 footers.

Quite like that, could Gagosian possibly be adding a new player to the roster?
He's certainly stepping up there with the big boys with this auction. I hope he gets a strong result for this tondo.

I don't work for Gagosian, but I assume not. The reason this group charity auction is being exhibited, is because it's organized by Takashi Murakami a cornerstone "living" contemporary artist for Larry Gagosian. The last "RED" charity blow out in 2008 was also exhibited at the Gagoian in NYC. In there was one of my favorite Banksy (keeping it spotless) and many other emerging notables, but of course he didn't join the Gagosian roster.

Ah I see, I remember that auction well, pre-sale was at Gagosian, however the sale with Sotheby's though. You're right, thanks for the insight.

very high, but I don't think it means too much. obviously there was a ton of buying power at this auction and 148k of that is a tax write off.
definitely nice to see KAWS do well though.

Agreed. And...Perrotin was bidding himself (up to $150k or so, from what I understand).
As for the write-off, this was a charity auction, so anything about primary gallery pricing (i.e., the estimate) is considered a donation and can be written off. Therefore, if you are wealthy enough to spend this kind of money, chances are pretty good that you are in the 50% tax bracket, and you will get half of every dollar back that you spend above the estimate.

Pretty predictable that there'd be fireworks due to tax sheltering benefits alone. But def thought it would easily achieve 100k, if not 150. Dude is savvy as hell for incorporating Murakami imagery. People can hate him for whatever reason they can justify. But you can't knock his business smarts. This wouldve been huge exposure to another collector pool even of he supplied one of his more current abstracted works. But if even a small fraction of Murakami collectors with silly money to drop are now tuned into his work that were unaware before, it'll only add fuel to the massive momentum he has already. That said, thing is ugly as fuck.

I like it too. It's pretty iconic Murakami with a soon to be iconic Kaws mixed it. If I had the cash I'd have put a bid as lets face it, however you want to justify the price, the money has gone to a great cause so this can only be a good thing.
