That's correct. That's how Paddle8 works. Pretty dumb, I know. Yeah really dumb, might as well ignore the online bidding and just wait till the live auction.

if it's a charity auction, would the winning bid be tax deductible ?

if it's a charity auction, would the winning bid be tax deductible ? I believe anything over the estimate is tax deductible usually but I'm not 100% sure.

This one was subject to 25% commission according to the small print. Uch. I'm in the same position on another piece. I really want the work , but 25% is just wrong.

The IRS could challenge you in an audit and make you go get an appraisal to show current market value instead of using the auction's estimate. I dont think they do that unless the work is valued $20,000 and over.

You'd have to be in a complete emotional panic to pay 25k for this. But nothing's shocking anymore. I honestly don't know about an emotional panic. I'm not saying it is worth 25k. I just wouldn't be surprised if it went for 25k. A 60" tondo went for 150k at a charity auction. KAWS work is not exactly to come by these days.

If the piece is estimated @ $10,000 and you have the money to bid and win it at $20,000 or $25,000 then financially it almost makes sense considering it’s a charity auction. I'd rather "overspend" $15,000 and take the tax deduction plus put a new painting on my wall compared to giving the government the money come tax season anyways. I know that isn't exactly how it works but it's the gist of it.

Tondo's are 15K but to get one of those is far from a walk in the park so you have to take that into consideration. I actually quite like the deckled edging, i think it would have looked weird as a perfect circle.

When I first saw the image online I had better thoughts about it but after seeing it, it is really small. And it's just a work on paper which will just always go for a lot less. The Tondo at Christies had a strong influence / connection to Murakami which makes it more desirable imo. And 25k is almost double what a canvas of this size would go for. It is definitely hard to get a Kaws canvas, but ... it's not that hard. But maybe it depends on who you know etc.? Pretty certain KAWS never did any tondo canvas works this size. To my knowledge the only canvas works this size are the PP's(non kurf) sans blister pack. Murakami influence or not, 150k is nowhere near primary for a 60" canvas. With that being said I was just trying to say that this work could potentially go for a lot more than primary based on a few different factors. Pretty certain the last tondos (20") were closer to 20k primary and that was last year prior to the museum shows. And if you "know" someone and don't want your spot because they are overpriced or easy to grab...I'll be happy to take it
