I continue to like KAWS' movement toward Rothko's concept of "tragedy, extasy, and doom" as the basic human emotions and focus of painting. KAWS is going deeper and deeper into the horror of modern life, both existential and real. Horror of our own making.
I was not sure 4 years ago of why KAWS deserved consideration as anything other than a 'designer' or a stylist of sorts. His Gering & Lopez show in 2008 began to change my mind, 2010's poorly-curated retrospective at Aldrich almost changed it back, and now it is made up. KAWS has the depth to be considered a great.

I was there earlier and have a couple of shots on my IG user henryrelph
When the kaws balloon came past on my corner I heard quite a few people go 'what the hell is that? What cartoon is he from?' I chuckled to myself. Still it looked really good as stood up with the others IMO.
