I've been hanging art on dry wall so it has been easy. Now, I have to hang art on plaster. I've heard there are special nails for plaster that won't damage the wall... or you can drill a small hole in the plaster first to prevent cracking.
Anybody have experience with plaster?

My house is mostly plaster walls having been built in the late 20s. I usually just use the regular picture frame hooks, but I always tape over the area I am going to hammer the nail into with clear scotch tape before hammering the nail in. It seems to have worked well over the years. I think I was originally told to do it in a X pattern?

Hey Marcusslo, I would contact www.ashleydistributors.com/ and get their advice. They seem to really know their stuff. I drilled into the plaster for a lot of our pieces, but it still cracked in some places and I am now fixing the walls so we get our security deposit back. Good luck.

We had plaster walls at our last apartment. Instead of nails I used these 3M adhesive picture hangers. but I used them only with prints and not originals [because that is all I had at the time]. Worked just fine, just had to watch the weight restrictions and they have to set for a half hour or so before you hang anything on them.

our home was built in 1929, and its a bitch to hang art. i always use a very thin drill bit, and ALWAYS put the screw in at a slight angle for strength.
an alternative is to get a piece of wood, find the studs and drill the wood into the studs. paint the wood black so it looks nice. you can then hammer a regular nail into the wood.
