I was looking forward to this book, but I've been surprised by the lukewarm reviews on Amazon. Think I might wait to look at one in person first.

Well, the review that brings down the average gave it a 2/5 because of the omission of the black and white portraits from 'Everybody Knows this is Nowhere.' Personally, I consider that a good thing since I much prefer Ryan's color work.

While I agree that I prefer the color work, I'm also a fan of completeness...so I would prefer the added material vs. an omission.

I'm not feeling this direction in his work at all. It makes him look like just another fashion photographer, albeit a very good one.

very nice pictures. i wouldn't have known the were taken by mcginley though if you put them in front of me blindly. as ever for me, a little part of the magic dies when an artist takes on a commercial project such as this.

I'm not feeling this direction in his work at all. It makes him look like just another fashion photographer, albeit a very good one. I agree that these aren't his best pieces, but I'd hesitate to call it a direction in his work. I'd consider this type of project to be illustration work rather than fine art for lack of a better term. I don't have a problem with artists picking up more commercial jobs, especially when it's a subject they're passionate about (which Ryan clearly is for fashion). I just have to draw a distinction between those jobs and his gallery works. Now if I see 72" prints of these hanging at Team's Basel booth, I'll be a little worried.

That's a very fair point but I was also referring to other recent 'fine art' works that are similar.

This show is going to be a bit icky unless you enjoy cute fluffy animals making like they're human genitals.

Concurrent shows in SF and NY. am I missing something or are these shows both actually in NYC and not SF and NYC?

one of the worst shows I have seen in a while. I was a fan of much of his work. Both of these shows were giant disappointments. The animal photos look like bad magazine adverts, and the photos of the concert goers were just boring. Hopefully he can follow up strong. This was a big step back.

Have to agree. On a day where I saw some really great work, the McGinley shows were the stinkers of the outing.

I know many phtographers pose their models. His Vogue photo shoot and this animal series somehow lose a sense of authenticity. I am still waiting for McGinley to re-create those spectacular shots from the Moonmilk series.

Anyone else been to the shows? My dislike of both hasn't mellowed at all since catching them a couple of weeks ago, but I would like to hear some other opinions as well...
