How about the ever ubiquitous music thread? Every site needs one. I also need new music suggestions. Since my favorite torrent site Oinks got shut down late last year finding good music has become harder. My music tastes definitely tend to lean toward the Indie Rock. Here's some new albums I've been really enjoying lately:
Black Keys - Attack and Release Kills - Midnight Boom Devotchka - A Mad and Faithful Telling Constantines - Kensington Heights Calexico - Tool Box Okay - Huggable Dust Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride
Some albums I'm looking forward to:
James Toth - Waiting in Vain Mates of State - Re-arrange Us Will Oldham - "Lie Down in the Light
What are some of the albums/artists you've been listening to?(help me out)
You should try emusic – it's economical, legal and specializes in indie music. If you search for "emusic free trial," you can even get a few albums free to start off.
I guess these would be my desert island discs at the moment... My tastes are kind of all over the map, but I generally look for music that's unique and fresh (not the flavor of the month) with interesting, intelligent lyrics.
What I'm listening to right now: Bike For Three - More Heart than Brains (not yet released) Everlast - White Trash Beautiful Townes van Zandt - Rear View Mirror Bonnie Prince Billy - The Letting Go Wax Tailor - Hope & Sorrow
Classics (and future classics) that I've heard hundreds of times, but still adore: Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane over the Sea Buck 65 - Talkin' Honky Blues Jim White - No Such Place Candy Machine - A Modest Proposal Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - The Firstborn Is Dead Tom Waits - Rain Dogs David Bowie - Hunky Dory Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique Cat Power - The Covers Record Beth Orton - Central Reservation My Dad Is Dead - The Taller You Are, the Shorter You Get PJ Harvey - Dry Palace Music - Viva Last Blues Morphine - Good Clare Fader - The Elephant's Baby Devendra Banhart - Rejoicing in the Hands The Decemberists - Castaways & Cutouts The Geraldine Fibbers - Lost Somewhere between the Earth and my Home Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender Psapp - Tiger, my Friend
Classics (and future classics) that I've heard hundreds of times, but still adore: Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane over the Sea
Cat Power - The Covers Record
PJ Harvey - Dry Palace Music - Viva Last Blues
Devendra Banhart - Rejoicing in the Hands The Decemberists - Castaways & Cutouts
I'm a huge Will Oldham fan so the Palace and Bonnie records get a lot of play. I'm also one of those music fans who thinks "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" might possibly be the greatest record ever made, so much passion in it. There's a bunch of stuff on your list I've never even heard of(Wax Tailor,Clare Fader,My Dad is Dead, Geraldine Fibbers) which is rare for me. So I'll have to check those out since you have most of them in your classics.
I'm obsessed right now with Animal Collective, and I'm still listening to LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver from last year.
Also lots of Clipse, Jay-Z, Arcade Fire, Robyn, certain Hot Chip songs, MIA, Santogold, old Nas, Joe Budden, Ashlee Simpson (yeah I said it, what?), Studio, RADIOHEAD (seeing them both shows at the Hollywood Bowl and I couldnt be more excited)
Just listened to the new No Age record today, thought it was pretty good.
Oh and I think the new Portishead is incredible!

I can relate to you musically because I own and really like all of these records. [snip]

That's great! I'll have to check out the stuff on your list, too, since our tastes correlate so much. I obviously love Will O as well, I've been obsessed with him since There Is No-One What Will Take Care of You came out and have seen him play about a dozen times.
You're absolutely right, In the Aeroplane over the Sea is the most emotionally gripping album ever made. There's no doubt about it. BTW, a friend of mind drew the "Flying Victrola" for the album artwork, which is why I picked it up in the first place... I knew nothing about it, just bought it because I recognized the drawing. (Oddly enough, I was at an in-store Palace gig.) What a surprise to find out it was pure genius!
Considering what records we both love, I thought you might like these, too: Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs Nick Drake - Pink Moon Heartless Bastards - All this Time Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy) Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Ballad of the Broken Seas Neko Case - Blacklisted The The - Hanky Panky
Also, I really think you might like Townes van Zandt (if you don't know him already), a heart-wrenching singer/songwriter that has a lot in common with Palace. Start with one of his early live albums like Rear View Mirror or A Gentle Evening with Townes van Zandt – his early studio recordings are a bit overproduced and might seem slightly dated.
This has been fun... it's given me a chance to dust off and play a few things I haven't paid attention to in too long.

This is also my favourite album of all time! Whenever I listen to it (which is very often) I think this is the album I would choose if I was allowed to listen to only one record for the rest of my life. I would throw away my whole CD collection without hesitation just to keep this one. The whole Anne Frank story embedded into the songs, the theme of death, reincarnation and carpe diem (with lyrics like "And one day we will die / and our ashes will fly / from the aeroplane over the sea / but for now we are young / let us lay in the sun / and count every beautiful thing we can see" which are tearing my heart out ). Sorry, I get really excited when I talk about this album and could go on for hours, but you got the point
How cool that you know the artist who did the drawing!
I will definitely have to check out some of the music mentioned in the posts above! For now here are my other favourites (I like every record of these artists, but those mentioned are the best imo)
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot Tindersticks - First Album Joanna Newsom - Ys Telstar Ponies - In the space of a few minutes Godspeed You Black Emperor - F#a#infinity Arcade Fire - Funeral Black Heart Procession - s/t Portishead - Dummy Black Mountain - s/t Scott Walker - Drift Lisa Germano - Lullaby for Liquid Pig
Some more I think were not already mentioned: early Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Belle & Sebastian, Isolation Years, Bright Eyes, Smog, 16 Horsepower, Woven Hand, A Silver Mount Zion.
Actually now I am rethinking throwing away all my CDs ...there is a lot of good music out there!
I think one reason why many of us like this album so much is that it's like the musical equivalent of the art we love... emotional, symbolic, surreal, arcane, disturbing, passionate, evocative.

These were new to me and interesting. I just downloaded some or all of them from emusic, as I can always use a fresh music infusion. I especially like the Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Black Heart Procession.
Given your taste, I think you might like Clare Fader's "The Elephant's Baby" as well as The Robot Ate Me's "On Vacation." And since you like spooky music, you should definitely check out Jim White's "No Such Place" and Johnny Dowd's "Pictures from Life's Other Side."

I was on the money when I said I could relate to your music taste because "On Vacation" is another album I love and I don't see to many people name drop that one. The first disc is pretty good but the second is amazing. I'm not really into his other albums though.
I'll throw a few out at you now Commandax. What do you think about some of these artists that I love:
Phosphorescent Crooked Fingers/Eric Bachmann Songs:Ohia/Jason Molina/MEC Nina Nastasia Scout Niblett Cave Singers Mirah Herman Dune Wooden Wand Karl Blau

Songs:Ohia/Jason Molina/MEC Scout Niblett
I know these two... Last night, I was going to add Songs:Ohia to my list for you, but I couldn't decide which album to add. I basically think "Freedom Pt. 2" is one of the greatest songs ever written. Love Scout's "Pom Poms."
Phosphorescent Crooked Fingers/Eric Bachmann Nina Nastasia Cave Singers Mirah Herman Dune Wooden Wand Karl Blau
These were new to me, so I checked them out. I really liked several of them. Nina Nastasia is interesting - I downloaded "Dogs" and a couple tracks from "You Follow Me." I liked The Cave Singers' "Dancing on our Graves." Love Wooden Wand, very intriguing stuff, I downloaded "Harem of the Sundrum & the Witness Figg."
Here are a few more for you, inspired by your latest list: Karen Dalton - In My Own Time Gwendolyn - Dew Petra Haden - Imaginaryland

Great that you liked the Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This is such powerful, in a way unearthly music. I don't know many people who have the patience to listen to a whole album from them. A few members of the band play in Silver Mount Zion, which keep changing their name, the last one was Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band. They are also exceptional. I can recommend all the stuff from Kranky/Constellation Records if you like this type of music.
And thanks a lot for your recommendations! I basically buy only the new albums from artists I already know, so it is good to get some fresh input, too. I just checked out The Robot Ate Me, which sounds great. Definitely the kind of music I like!
I think I really dig spooky music (or at least more than other types). I forgot to mention Nico "The Marble Index" and "The End" but this is so utterly depressing that it scares people to death.
But then I also love Of Montreal. Their last album was all about anxiety and depression (of course), but at least packed into fun pop songs
Godspeed You! Black Emperor is great, kind of combining it with the movie thread, but I think the music they did for 28 Days Later was amazing, it combined so well with the frenzied pace of the movie. Definitely one of the best, but under appreciated movie soundtracks.
Oh, and I can't get enough of Iron and Wine lately.
Oh, and I can't get enough of Iron and Wine lately.
Agreed, the Iron & Wine is great but I still prefer their older albums.
I was disappointed with the James Toth album. There's a few great songs(Nothing to Hide,The Dome,The Park) but the rest doesn't do anything for me. Loved the new Bonnie Prince Billy record but once again prefer the older gloomier albums like "I see a Darkness". Ratatat's new one is great if you like all instrumental music.
There's a band called Those Dancing Days profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=141310163 that i just can't get enough of. They're an all girl band from Sweden that make this infectious/dancey/soulful/pop music. Normally you would lose me at dancey let alone pop. I recommend at least checking them out now because I have a feeling you're eventually going to be bombarded with their music. Let's just put it this way they're a record exec's wet dream come true. Here's a Quicktime for their new Single "Run,Run". You'll see what I mean:
