Sacramento to NY to attend the opening show at Jonathan Lavine gallery, and the Outside art fair at the same time... Sac to LA 3-4 times a year for shows.

SF to Paris. Hopefully I'll beat that this year with SF to Grottaglie (need to start saving up for a ticket now) interesting! what for? In college I got a degree in Art History and I was pretty obsessed with art that was created for religious contexts (think alter pieces and fresco cycles in chapels, that kinda thing). I decided one winter break I was going to go to Europe to see as much classical art as I could stand, since up until that point my exposure was only to slides/art books. So for three weeks I backpacked around Paris, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Madrid and Barcelona. While I was there I hit up many major art collections (Louvre, Uffizi, Vatican, Reina Sophia) and basically burnt myself out on classic stuff. I'm still awe struck by much of the art I saw and used to study, but since then my interests have moved on to more contemporary artists, particularly artists that have street art backgrounds. I made a New Years resolution to go to Grottaglie, Italy this year for Famefest, so if I make that, that would be the farthest I have traveled for art. That was probably a longer explanation than you needed! :-D

I'm going to be in Paris for a long weekend in early Oct. Anyone know of any great galleries to visit or shows to see while there-- or otherwise have any tips?
I've been there many times before, but I'm not a huge fan so it's been awhile. I know Murakami is at Versailles but that's about it.

I'm probably forgetting something.

Thanks for the tips! I'll check it out. Looking also for gallery suggestions, since it's an opportunity to get to know some of the folks who run them.
I'll be there first week in October-- my favorite time of year.

On art trips at college we drove from the UK to .. Venice, Barcelona and Bilbao. Three different trips of around 24hrs on a bus. Technically not that far if you fly... but a bus is a different thing !
