I don't know. IMHO, the guy is a liar and a hack. He appropriates to the point where I have Zero interest in his un-original work plus he tries to sue people for appropriating his "Work" which is the same fucking thing he does! Hypocrite. I don't see the hype....

I don't have anything against Fairey, but I'll miss the Os Gemeos mural. It was pretty magical.

are any of the segments new images? most seem familiar, but i don't follow too closely... would have been better to have killed this spot with all new work for such a big event.

I'm all for cycling through artists for this mural location, as it's nice and refreshing to mix things up..in theory. But it's really too bad the Os Gemeos masterpiece was taken down for this. Alas, now that it's up, I suppose it turned out alright.

Yeah I was kinda pissed to see the Os Gemeos piece missing. I was in NYC for 24 hours last Sunday and one of my goals was to see that mural. I must have gotten there a few hours too late cause by the time I walked by the entire thing was freshly painted over. (literally just missed it, the group of 4 or 5 assistants were finishing up a second coat of white). :-( Boo hoo. If I had known this Fairey piece was going to be going right up I would have stuck around a little longer but I decided continue exploring... 24 hours in NYC is not enough time!

Fortunately, the Os Gemeos piece is still there. They built a wall in front of it for the Fairey. "More recently, someone punctured the piece, perhaps with a rock or a brick, leaving several small holes and one gaping one through which a previous mural, by the twins known as Os Gemeos, is visible. (Mr. Fairey’s work was put up on a wall built over the Os Gemeos mural, and is intended to stay up at least through the summer.)"

That's good to hear because IMHO the Os Gemeos piece is heads and shoulders about Sheps.

Anyone go to the opening, thoughts on it? Here is my two cents. Enjoyed: I enjoyed the work, was impressed by the size and execution of it all, got to chat to some of my favorite artist that were in attendance like Kaws, Parla, WK etc.. Lots of great new street art was erected in the area as a result of this show opening. Disliked: I really did get the feeling that a lot of people were there because it was the place to be that night. I waited in line for about an hour and a half before I got in and listening in on the conversations while in line gave me the overwhelming sense that a lot of people associated Fairey with the Obama poster but didn’t know much more about him or his work. I would have liked it if the preview list went out before the opening(maybe it did and I was just not privy). I have a bad feeling that a large chunk of the work will not be going to people who know and follow Fairey’s work but rather a group of high profile celebrities and collectors whose financial advisors and what’s cool coaches have informed them to do so. Where was Russell Simmons during Fairey’s last Levine show???
Overall a good time although it was a zoo at points!

Where was Russell Simmons during Fairey’s last Levine show??? Russell was actually at the Primary Flight afterparty this year in Miami where Shepard was djing. So maybe he does know Shep's work? Or maybe that was just the place to be that night too.

Shepard has donated work to Russell Simmons' charity, Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation in 2008 and 2009. auction01.charitybuzz.com/catalog_items/93689

Deitch gets a bloody nose at the Mayday opening when someone accidentally bumps into him. Caught on film by a fan waiting in line. Wow, he's pissed...

No doubt. It's kind of ugly watching him tear into the poor guy after he apologizes.

It would be great if someone could superimpose the Deitch video with the "My nobe, my nobe" Brady Bunch episode!

Geez Deitch... I imagine Mayday was a *little* stressful for the guy, but a fatlip/busted nose could set anyone off. Here's a link to a radio interview of Shepard Fairey on Banksy. I thought it was an interesting interview. warholian.com/?p=342

On Tuesday there were quite a few of the smaller rubyliths left these came in three price brackets 5, 7 and 10 thousand a pop. The canvas work sold out on the night of the opening and they ranged in the 65,000 grand area.

i was just at the show earlier today and overheard that the "summers" (sic?) piece may still be available.
pieces were much more effective in person, imho. definitely worth seeing.
