Nice. I like how she has to go to those pigeon shows to gather all the feathers...

Cool, just read that. She collected them all from South Shields which is where I grew up. I just noticed some of the feathers have text on them, I'm assuming due to them being racing/homing pigeons.

They really do have quality of being alive. And there's a serpentine ominousness about them as much as there is a sense of repose, like they could unfurl from their coil and strike at you if provoked. The fact they're enclosed in glass boxes heightens the effect.
Wonderful.

I came very very close to buying the top piece in the first post. I love Kate's work and it's connotations of the power of genetic science mixed with the Victorian obsession with sideshow curiosities. It's incredibly poetic and powerful.

Where does she show? I was on her website and didn't get a sense-- it seemed like she's doing big installation type shows of the type featured above. The work is really unique and powerful.

She was in a group show in Hoxton Square in London that closed yesterday unfortunately. Get on her mailing list. She's good at keeping people up to date.

I went to the opening of AVA's new gallery space in Kings Cross yesterday evening. Seeing MccWire's work on this scale outside the confines of a bell jar is quite unsettling but very very beautiful....

These things scare the shit out of me, especially when they're not contained beneath glass. I can only imagine how eerie the come across in person at that larger scale. It's unique artwork like this, and not a painting of a bloody ghoulish figure or something cliche, that truly tap into the ever effective beautiful yet disturbing juxtaposition.

I came very very close to buying the top piece in the first post. Please excuse the quick double post..But what was the white piece your referring to priced at? Just wondering what the market is for these.

The medium size pieces, including the white one and the two in the photo under that all tend to be around £12,000. The small ones, like the blue one that Sleepboy posted further down the page are £10,000. Unfortunately at this scale it's no less work for her to produce a small one. Each of these takes her and 2 assistants at least a month to make and, particularly in the case of the blue one, it can take at least a couple of years to collect enough feathers.
