LeBasse Projects presents: 'Acquiring Signal' New Work from David Choong Lee Opening Reception: Saturday, Aug 14th, 7-10pm 'Acquiring Signal' will be David Choong Lee's second major Installation based exhibition. Completely wrapping the gallery walls, Lee's 500+ piece installation pays homage to street people and the cities they inhabit. A combination of paintings and sculptures, his large scale wall collage will be his most inventive architectural work to date. Based out of San Francisco's street art movement, Korean born artist Lee reflects on social conditions within youth culture, urban environments and generation "next," tapping into both American and Korean visual aesthetics. Sociopolitical and economic issues surrounding homelessness and youth populations are at the heart of Lee's paintings, which play with the subcultures' politics of power, judgment and perception. Lee's on-location assemblages embody concepts that float between his choice of subject matter, material and technique. The graffiti-like amalgamations fold in traditional figurative portraiture and promote public discourse, challenging the notion of what is considered fine art. Lee¹s most recent exhibition in 2009, 'Sunshine on Cast Shadows' was showcased at The University of Arizona¹s Joseph Gross Gallery and Lee has been widely exhibited internationally including recent shows in San Francisco, New York and Montreal. I know David a little (we have about a million mutual friends) and have been following his work for a few years...got two paintings of his myself...really great stuff. Anyone in the area should check out the show.
He did a large installation-style show here in SF about, I don't know, 18 months to two years ago at Bucheon in a shared show with Mars-1, set up a huge tower of art at the Babylon Falling closing party, and recently had an installation about 15 feet by 15 feet at the 941 Geary opening event. The smaller pieces are great individually, but form like Voltron and really blow you away when they're combined into the huge assemblages.

DCL is going for it this week. Apparently there are now 600+ pieces being used to wrap the walls and build a freestanding sculpture. More images shortly as the install comes together, but maybe Ken can post some images from his recent studio visit?

Not entirely sure how this will all be on the walls in 48 hours.

This show is epic. The range of skill demonstrated is as diverse as the media-- oil, spraypaint, acrylic, collage, some items thickly painted, others with the cigar box stamps and stickers incorporated into the work, all very painterly done, depicting a mix of trippy symbolic abstraction to masterful photorealism, all thoughtfully put together. The work is presented in large, assembled groupings that fill every wall floor to ceiling that almost overwhelms when you walk in the door. You can spend hours just inspecting all the detail and thought behind each piece. David is a great guy, too.
If you're in LA, don't miss it!

Double all what ol' Weezy said. EPIC show. Simply overwhelms as you go in. If anyone has the space to rock one of those as is in their home and picks one up, I hope they post pics here of it in their home. Amazing show.

I don't know how to post video...but check it out: Vimeo - DCLIf you have not seen David Lee's exhibition you need to before we close on September 10th. A big chunk is going to a major collection, the rest will end up in a museum. You can thank me later for making you see this exhibit.
