Here's one that I regret passing on: It's still available $5,500 as of this minute just contact White Walls. It would go so nice with mine but can't afford to. It would end up being the last thing I bought this year. Meaning no KMNDZ or Ceccoli. wow, i really dig this piece. it looks crisp. she is really progressing nicely as an artist. at first the faces were kind of a turn off, but now i can see the originality in her style. i like the color palette used in this piece.

Those new pieces are amazing. So gorgeous. But there's something lacking for me... maybe it's just that I loved her skull pieces so much, I'm not sure.

at some point, I will be acquiring one of her originals from a friend of mine. I'm going to give him a new painting for it. I first saw her work when she posted it on the now defunct Art Dorks website I thought she was a little rough around the edges, . . .but showed some good talent. I remember her having a show at a restaurant or lounge at first, . . .we all have to start somewhere, . . .now her work is more refined, though I'm not a big fan of the day of the dead stuff, . . .I've seen that done too many times by other artists. I really like the two pieces that Masao626 posted here very much!!

Posted up an interview here. Here's part of it. Arrested Motion (AM): Many artists grew up in families that were not art influenced. We heard that your father painted and your mom kept sketch books. How do you think that influenced your decision to get into the arts? Sylvia Ji (SJ): Both of my parents are highly creative and yet they never sought out to make a career of it as raising a family and making ends meet took precedence. Over the years, I saw in my dad the tortured artist, unable to create without time or freedom. I thank them eternally for allowing me to follow my dreams. AM: Since your 2007 show with White Walls, you’ve painted many of your subjects with the Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) theme. What is your fascination with this Mexican holiday and what led you to incorporate this theme into your repertoire? SJ: I’ve always been drawn to the dark, macabre side of life, always trying to incorporate elements/idea of “memento mori” which in Latin means “be mindful of death.” The iconic image of “La Catrina” created by José Posada has been around for nearly a century. Through research I was introduced again to that image and was instantly drawn into the idea of death as a woman and how beauty and life is fleeting.

The subject in Sylvia Ji's glorious Santa Muerte painting was in the news last week. Kind of scary. Fans of Sylvia's work might find this fascinating. Mexico City, April 2009Defending 'Saint Death': Two hundred worshippers of the Mexican folk goddess Santa Muerte -- Saint Death -- staged a protest this week after the army bulldozed 35 shrines to her as part of the government's war on drugs. Santa Muerte, a skeletal figure also known wryly as La Flaca (the Skinny One) is considered the patron saint of criminals because she is said to honor evil requests as well as good ones. The protesters said most believers are ordinary, law-abiding people, but narcotraffickers often build altars to Santa Muerte in their safe houses and sport tattoos of her visage. The elaborate concrete shrines destroyed this month near the Texas border only served to glorify drug culture, said Tijuana Mayor Jorge Ramos. "Should we permit these spaces," he said, "where hired assassins who kill children, families, and police seek protection?" Sylvia Ji "Santa Muerte" acrylic & mixed media on panel - 20" x 30"
