You know I'm on board, given my recent head scratching over Edwin being "pop surreal"
Seems like a lot of work to do so thanks. The only "drawback" I can think of is that the mislabeling that existed before encouraged me to check out the posts in areas where I have less of an interest (e.g. pop surrealism) in case I missed something new. And in so doing it taught me that there is at least some pop surreal art that I do enjoy. Accordingly I'll continue to review new posts there.

Hello all,
The migration has begun. It will probably take a few days to get all the artists situated in a place that makes sense. If, after a few days have passed, and everything seems to have settled down, you have a big problem with where a particular artist has been categorized, please feel free to PM me and let me know what you think.
We decided to do this because, for example, it seemed silly for us to be putting Jeff Soto and Jeff Koons in the same category, and at the same time, Jeremy Geddes and Jeremy Fish don't really seem like they come from the same world, either. Recently, Hi-Fructose changed its sub-title from "Under the Counter Culture" to "New Contemporary Art." We have also come to the conclusion that there's so much unique work being made out there right now that doesn't fit tidily into a specific genre that it only makes sense to acknowledge that.
Here are the criteria we're using to sort everything out at the moment. There will definitely be some overlap, so bear with us.
Lowbrow/Pop Surrealism: Artists who have come up in the "underground" tradition of La Luz, Copro and Merry Karnowsky, and those who are influenced by them. Cartoon-tinged surrealism mixed with a wide variety of subcultures: car culture, lounge culture, tattoo culture, etc.
New Contemporary Art: Emerging contemporary artists who are making work from a fresh perspective or with non-traditional imagery, but are not specifically associated with the lowbrow or pop surrealism movement. Kind of a catch-all category for everyone else who's making interesting art who hasn't become a superstar yet.
Contemporary Art: First of all, artists who have "made it" in the contemporary art world... I might put an artist here if they've had a piece exhibited at MOMA, or in the Whitney Biennal, or in Saatchi's collection, or if they were a big hit at a gallery like Blum & Poe, Haunch of Venison, Deitch or Gagosian. Also, artists painting in a more formal, traditional manner, even if they're not famous. For lack of anywhere else to put them, I am also including famous illustrators from previous generations, such as Steadman, Frazetta, Rockwell and Moebius.
Best, Amanda

seems a good idea to me, although i can see some of the 'pop surrealist' artists (and galleries) not wanting to be associated with 'lowbrow'...
i can see there will be some shuffling around in the near future, but definitely see that this is a positive action.
