I really liked how he changed it up for Levine. I thought it showed some great growth and added a new dimension to our friend the space monkey.
The new work just looks like bad wallpaper to me. I am certainly not an arbiter of taste and I don't have a great eye so I hope this work finds an audience for James. Maybe I'm just old school and too set in my ways to change.

Yah, I like his older work a little better. More interesting. Not the early space monkeys but the more abstract ones. Apparently, the monkeys are in his newer work, just better hidden.
From a previous interview:
AM: Well, it seems that the Space Monkeys should be afraid of you more than anyone since you are the one who has been exterminating them from the paintings. I saw two of your new works down at Art Basel and there were almost no traces of them left.
JM: You know…they’re just developing better camo to hide out in the vastly expanding environment they live in. They’re being consumed by their own relentless need to consume and procreate. They’re there. You just have to really want to see them. As the old saying goes, “just like cockroaches,” or something in the general nature of that sentiment.

I adore his 2007 Levine period work but am with the others in not really feeling his latest batch that omit the characters all together. I wish I picked something up at the time, oh well.

Dalek is the man!! I haven't had the experience of seeing his work up close but I've read in numerous interviews that this paintings are all done by hand.
Anyone know if he outlines his paintings in black acrylic, ink, sharpie etc and with the aid of a ruler or compass? His stuff is just so flawless.
Great community by the way. Glad I found this board.

Hey welcome. I think he does use ruler/tapes and other aids to get straight lines. You can see some of that here. It's interesting how some people like his new work because it's more abstract and that's the exact reason why some people don't. I for one liked his stuff in between haha. Here are some shoes he worked on recently.

Thanks for the reply sleepboy. Yeah, I do see that he does use painters tape and rulers for his newest work but his earlier work (space monkeys) has lots of circles and curves. I'm so curious as how he's getting such clean crisp perfect circles and circular strokes with a paint brush if that is what he is using.
Do they make drafter's compass that can hold a paint brush?

Excellent physicians, nurses and other staff in every pediatric subspecialty come together to form a multidisciplinary team, capable of dealing with virtually any childhood disease or disorder. About the Artist James Marshall, also known as Dalek, has been known for his Space Monkey character, a futuristic mouse that had a prominent role in previous series of works. Marshall has been relying less on characters, though, preferring to let the colours and patterns of his super flat paintings speak for themselves. The compositions are sharp, geometric renditions of abstraction that are "busy environments that echo the mechanical repetition of industrial mass-production." Perhaps the Space Monkey is still hidden within the variety of clean shapes and optical perspectives.

Looks fantastic, congrats! If I may ask why did you go the commission route since these are the types of works Dalek has been making available through his gallery shows as of late? I too have never gone this way and any insight into the thinking behind such a commission is always appreciated, I’ve thought about it many a times myself.

I too have never gone this way and any insight into the thinking behind such a commission is always appreciated, I’ve thought about it many a times myself. it was my first experience with a commission as well. I definitely was nervous about buying something site unseen but James made so it so easy that after our first conversation I was totally chill moving forward. He asked me about color and layouts from previous work on his website. I picked out about 6-8 pieces and the rest was history. To answer your question about why commission vs exhibition... I don't have a specific answer but it was just after his show at Irvine and I couldn't find any originals. A friend was on his commission list and hooked it up for me so I jumped at the chance. It took away the worry of trying to get on a list so I was all for it. In fact I was originally asking James to go down the road of some of his older work 07-08 but when I saw what he was doing lately especially some of the pieces at Elms I had him go as current as possible. Glad I did because I couldn't be happier.

That piece is looking fantastic, meatbag. Looking really cool on your wall. There is a nice interview with Dalek on hi fructose vol. 15. The interview gave me in-depth understanding of his process behind his works. It gave me different level of appreciation for what he's doing and his direction.
