I am a big Dalek fan and stumbled across this forum whilst looking something up on the web. I was interesed in meatbag's account of commissioning a piece as I have just done the same. I also sent images on the pieces I liked and have to admit they were mainly from the 07/08 period as well. I was half hoping he would do one of those older style more 3D pieces but respect (and admire) he has moved on. I have only seen an image of the piece which is on his blog but was well pleased with it. I actually like all his 'newer style' pieces. I went to the show as Elms (as I'm in the UK) and these things in the flesh are truly mind blowing. You do take a bit of a chance with a commission in terms of what you end up with but if its an artist you love its normally fine and considerably cheaper. Its nice when an artist does not want to turn the clock back as well. When Shag took commissions it was possible to get the mirror image of a piece you liked. Not sure I would be too happy as the owner of the original.

very very nice. I noticed the new ones on his blog and that was my fav from the group. Congrats on a great piece. I know when mine arrived it was a holy sh*t moment. They I was afraid to touch it.

good luck unwrapping the piece. The guy who sends out his work is insanely protective and it took me about 20 minutes to get to it... haha.

Thanks for the heads up on the packing. Its coming across the pond so pleased its packed well. I was wondering on a perspex box to put it in or some kind of see through cover I saw once at one of the galleries just to protect it but not sure.

Hurley hosts a solo exhibit by Southern California artist Dalek



Surf and skate brand Hurley is dedicating its SPACE gallery in Costa Mesa to artist James Marshall — known professionally as Dalek.

The artist will exhibit a single 37-foot continuous wall mural painting — a vibrantly hued work of synergistic geometric shapes dubbed "Chaos on the Edge of Reason" — that will be offered for sale by the square foot and cut out and framed on demand during the show's Aug. 4 opening night party (7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 1945 Placentia Ave., Costa Mesa).

It's not the first time the SoCal-based artist has worked with Hurley. Earlier this year, he collaborated with the brand on a pair of custom board shorts, which featured another one of his kaleidoscopic, multicolored prints. Dalek, who was roomies with Hurley-sponsored skateboarder Kris Markovich in his early career, was also commissioned to create a painting for Hurley's 225 Forest concept store in Laguna Beach, which stocks Nike 6.0, Converse and Hurley.

The new mural uses a whopping 75 Pantone colors, and will be priced at $200 per square foot, available in three sizes: 2-by-2, 3-by-3 and 4-by-4. A smaller companion painting and four limited-edition 36-by-48 works on paper will also be available.

And yes, you can decide which part of the painting you want to cut out. Just know that buying a slice means becoming a part of a larger project; everyone who walks away with a mini-mural will be photographed with their cut and interviewed on video. The resulting still photos and video will be used in a book and video on the project.

I'm trying to calculate if that makes the pieces cheaper than gallery pieces but I forgot how much they go for. I think it has to be cheaper right? But perhaps with less detail.

yea, definitely less detail but the prices are way less then his original's on board. A 24" x 24" cut out was $800 compared to probably around $8k. Can't beat it. Did anyone get prices on the three pieces on board at the show? They were really nice.

Yeah, the prices def can't be beat. I imagine it was hard to find a 24x24 chunk with enough work to make it feel even remotely composed. But it looks like you could've pulled a 3x3 piece out fairly well that looked nice.



Anyone have an idea what the deal was with the above framed works? The darker - yet still colorful - palette and the somewhat subtler or more thoughtout and/or less loud compositions are really appealing to me. I realize they're Iris print outs. And I imagine they were built in photoshop, as I know that's one of his preliminary methods. Perhaps they were oneoff digital works? But can anyone confirm that they weren't original paintings preproduced as prints? If I were to finally add something by James to the collection, it would be in the same vein as these works. I just love everything about them. I can't say that for most of his work. These have a completely different feel. Those red diamond and the patchwork pyramid shapes are great. And love the black.

think these turned out pretty strong. obv he toned down the complexity based on the time constraints and the scale of the panels. but some solid results for a few days with simple paint and tape. the masking with the tape alone is pretty damn impressive. think i posted it somewhere, but reminds me of oliver marsden's work with a geometric spin.

I love Dalek's work and it's great that he is progressing forward with new ideas. That said this is nothing really new and very similar to work done within the Op Art movement in the 60's; maybe an influence? Hopefully it makes a comeback and it's not only Briget Riley that gets mentioned.
